I am a writer and collage artist living in Denver, CO. My current project is a dynamic interaction between collage and my novel, Seven Maples.

The novel is inspired by the southern gothic greats like Flannery O'Connor, Breece D'J Pancake, and William Faulkner. It is also inspired by my family's deep roots in the Appalachian Mountains and a plantation house that they owned, and lost, just outside of Rogersville, TN. On the other side of my family, my great great great grandmother was a Hatfield and my great great grandfather worked for the railroad and died from silicosis.

In my book I am piecing together what it means to have such deep roots in an area that I was distanced from. My mom is one of the only ones in her family to have left home. My family history is a mix of pride and sorrow. It is this dynamic that I am interested in exploring through the Seven Maples Project.

The Seven Maples project started on paper and before long grew to a multimedia exhibition and seven volume collage project. Each volume explores a kind of sorrow that we experience as a part of being human. I am in the process of collecting as much collage material as I can related to the seven sorrows in the book: death, liminality (the in-between), mourning, darkness, anima mundis (our connection between all living things), the unknown (as expressed as water), and blood (our connection to our ancestors and the past).

As with most things, the sorrows that I have chosen to explore with the Seven Maples Project are not black and white. Our interconnectedness to the world, anima mundis, can be a source of great energy and comfort, or it can be a source of sorrow as we try to retreat from the world, but our reliance on connection pulls us back.

After nearly seven years of work, I am ready to finalize this project and put it out into the world. Get exclusive access to blog posts including updates on the seven volume collage and writing material that won't be included in the book by joining one of the seven tiers.
