I write fiction. I LOVE writing fiction. My first novel was published just over twenty years ago in 1998 and, well, things have changed quite a lot since then. The whole internet has been invented, more or less. And with it, this new way of being able to connect directly with my readers. I am SO excited.

If you don't already know, I'm a European writer based in the UK. I was born in London in 1972. I've written nine novels, a book about writing and some stuff for kids too. My work has been translated into over 25 languages. My most well-known novel is called The End of Mr Y. It was published in 2006 and is about language, philosophy and love. My most recent novel is called The Seed Collectors. It is about biology, philosophy and, well, a pretty earthy kind of love. As well as writing fiction full time, I am Professor of Creative Writing at the University of Kent, where I've been teaching since 2004.

My new novel Oligarchy will be out with Canongate in November 2019. I’m so bloody excited about it. It’s a dark comedy about eating disorders and murder set in a girls’ boarding school in England. There’s lots and lots of news about it on here. I've also just finished a novella called The Honeymoon, which should be out with Canongate soon. I'm currently working on a memoir of the year I reached number 6 in my age group in the UK playing tennis (and went a bit mental along the way)...

I'm not going to lie. I am not the most extrovert of writers. I go quiet when I'm thinking. My Twitter is pretty shit. My Instagram's a bit better (if you like random stories featuring lucky cats and divorce cakes that is). But I am genuinely really thrilled to have this way of being able to share things with you directly. To be able to release exclusive short stories. To be able to post news about my projects that might be a bit too long, or too specific for social media (and, while not involving nudity - well, not always - may not be suitable for the children either). To give writing advice to those who want it. To be able to plan talks and lectures and book events with your help - and for you to be my VIP guests. Most of all, I want to share my archives with you - all the bits and bobs I've written that are out of print or hard to get hold of. I see this as part patronage and part subscription - you will actually get a lot of stuff just from joining, and there's more to come.

I remember one long night back in 1999 or so when I was half-heartedly stalking Doug Coupland - who was then my favourite writer and biggest influence. I actually found him on ICQ! Rather sensibly, he pretended to be someone else. Well, sort of. I knew it was him. I didn't know what to say. I just wanted to be in his world, somehow, and not in a totally creepy way, just as a fan. How I would have loved, back then, to be able to support his writing in return for some exclusive content, stories, news and so on. It's for that reason that I am doing this.

I'm going to continue publishing my novels and major projects with Canongate for the foreseeable future. I don't always love the mainstream publishing model but, well, they're my mates and long-term collaborators. But even Canongate don't necessarily want to publish the more out-there stuff I might create. I have short stories from back in the day that might only appeal to actual fans. And I'm sure Canongate won't mind if I post the first chapters of new projects here long before the books make it into the real world.

I used to write for the Guardian more, but I hate the Below the Line crap, and also when they commission something and don't run it and don't pay me :-( So this is now the place where I'll share most of my reviews and features and also where I'll post recommendations whenever the spirit moves me. I can't promise how much of this stuff I'll do but it will either be exclusive to this space, or certainly appear here first.

I'll listen to feedback and see what people want me to share here. But what can I say? There will definitely be exclusive fiction at the very least. I'll be building an archive of my short stories which I'll be sharing via Dropbox. You'll get the link when you sign up. And for people interested in creative writing teaching, there'll be a separate archive for you of all kinds of writing advice and materials. And the matrix I know you all want :-)

And who knows? If we get enough people on here, maybe I'll write a novella and create a limited edition version just for my patrons. And sign it and everything.
