About Scullin Community Group

Everyone knows it: the Scullin shops are, let's be kind and say "sad".

Talk to anyone from Scullin and they'll say how much they love our little suburb. But inevitably, talk turns to our struggling local shops.

While a handful of businesses still do a brisk trade, we have empty shopfronts, a closed supermarket that was better known for exporting baby formula and ugg boots than providing milk and bread for locals, and a vibe that says "Nothing to see here".

But enough of the past!  The Scullin Community Group is working to change all of that and we are already making massive inroads, using people power to turn the shops back into a community hub.

We are an incorporated association and we are creative, enthusiastic and organised. We don't just talk: we DO. Since we launched in October 2018 we've made incredible progress.  Don't take our word for it - have a look at our 3 min video below (including a great rap in the ACT Parliament for our work) and then, jump onboard for as little as $5 a month and help make our community entrepreneurship hub - The Scullin Traders - a roaring success.

The Scullin Traders is an experiment of community, creativity and radical transparency.

The 60m2 space in the front half of a wholesale bakery will feature:

  • An 'annex' for Cafe Bolivar, allowing coffee cart customers to drink coffee inside on comfy couches.
  • A workshop space for arts and other workshops.
  • The "Scullin General Store" - a corner selling bread, milk and basics (remember, no supermarket) and featuring products for sale from numerous small Canberra businesses (we already have an indoor plant nursery, florist, jeweller and ceramicist signed up).
  • A coworking space with four desks available.
We have been heartened to receive a $5000 one off donation from the ACT Chief Minister's Fund to help support this project: invaluable in helping go full steam ahead from May 1!
Goals
$86 of $1,000 per month
When we reach $1000 per month, that covers the rent on our first pop up space: the Scullin Traders.  This will give us the freedom to support more micro-businesses, workshops and events in the space, and experiment with what works.
