For ten years I’ve been enjoying writing words about words: word tasting notes, articles on grammar, and weird other stuff. Along with my blog Sesquiotica and my YouTube channel, plus Strong Language, the group blog I co-founded, I’ve come out with two books on words – Songs of Love and Grammar and Confessions of a Word Lush – as well as a couple of other published works. I’ve also been making videos, including pronunciation tips on non-English words. I’ve happily built up a community of over a million visits and more than 17,000 followers for Sesquiotica and well over half a million views for my YouTube videos.

All that time, I did it all for free (except for my books and my articles in publications such as The Week and the BBC). I worked full-time in-house and this just kept me happy after hours. I used the free version of my WordPress blog, which shows ads to pay WordPress for it.

Now I’m a full-time freelancer, which means I can also spend some of my daytime hours on the words about words. I’m adding new features and new perks. I’m also paying to take the ads off Sesquiotica.

So now I’m using Patreon to add subscriptions to Sesquiotica. Most of what’s there is free to everyone as it always has been, but there are also things just for subscribers, because why not? My new series of “new old words” is available for subscribers only. I’m recording myself reading blog posts for next-level subscribers. At even higher levels, you can request a real or invented word for me to make an article of video about, get an annual word freak’s calendar, and even get a special annual book.

You don’t have to subscribe. What’s always been there will still be there. But if you do subscribe, I’ll thank you with extra stuff! And you’ll be a member of a secret set of word nerds.
