About Jo Weldon: Sex Work and Spandex

Thank you for checking out my Patreon offering!

I'm Jo Weldon and I've been working in adult entertainment (ahem) for over four decades. I've also been a sex workers' rights advocate since the 1980s, fighting censorship and stigmatization. Over the past several years I've seen sex workers' rights movements accelerate around the world, and the number of people currently addressing the issues that I've spent so much time writing about and lobbying for seems large enough that I believe it's a good time for me to get personal and work on my own story.

I’ve written and published about topics that I’m passionate about: fighting censorship, sex workers’ rights, burlesque, and even fashion history from a people’s point of view in my book Fierce: The History of Leopard Print. However, I’ve published relatively little about myself in sex work. After much urging and many requests from my friends and associates, I’m finally ready.

I’m creating a one-woman show and a book based on this work, which will combine autobiography, fashion history, women’s stories, and whore politics.

The main purpose of this Patreon is to support this, my first full-length project about sex work, which I’ve been developing for over a year now. You’ll get to see the work-in-progress as I finish it, including plenty of exclusive raw material that won’t make it to the final project, and you’ll be able to comment and participate in the process if you like. You'll get stories, historical facts, pop culture analyses, rough drafts, and more. You’ll be the first to know when my project is about to go public. I'll post photos of myself from my sex work past and present that I can't post on public social media or email lists.

If that sounds interesting to you, you’re in the right place!

And if you are looking for a way to support sex workers, you’re in the right place.

This is for you if you are a sex worker, an ally, or compassionately curious.

This is for you if you want to be inside the process of me developing this project. I’ll show you the research, the raw writing, the ideas that came and went, and more. I’ll include photos of me from my sex industry work history that illustrate what I’m discussing (and if you find them titillating, that’s fine with me!). I’ll also include my scheduled doings and a monthly essay from my free email list, so that you’re in on everything. You’ll get all the news regarding this project before I announce it publicly or on social media.

This is for you if you, like me, find that intimacy and honesty is frequently violated on social media, where strangers jump in with bizarre histrionic critiques that seem to be responses to entirely different conversations, and grind their axes with “not really a question more of a comment” intrusions into rare and valuable discussions. I want this to be personal, not viral, and I’m counting on you to respect my privacy the way I, as a sex worker, have respected my clients’ privacies. I’m asking you to reveal nothing about what you read here and let me release it into public view in my own way and in my own time. This is between us.

Content warning: sex, drugs, and rock n roll. I have no way of knowing what parts of my stories might be triggering for you, so I can’t promise a safe space as I am writing to some degree about living outside of safe spaces, but I promise you an accountable space, where if you tell me something is problematic I will take you seriously and work to understand, improve, and make amends when in order.

If you think this is for you, I'd be honored to have you join! I hope you are entertained and moved and enlightened, and I believe we will have some amazing discussions, the kind that don’t happen in public social media spaces where everyone constantly has to navigate around hostile onlookers.
And if you’re a hostile onlooker and I spot you, you’re outta here 😊 The rules are 1) be sensitive to each other and 2) don’t share my material without my permission. If you think it’s fabulous and you want people to know about it, please invite them here to join us.
