I'm Shamus Young. I make words. I know it's hard to sell people on words these days. Everyone watches videos. If you're one of those people that still prefers an article to a video essay, then I'm your guy. I post several articles a week and I work hard to make sure the reading experience is smooth. No ads, no bloat, no autoplay nonsense. Just words, punctuation, and the occasional screenshot. Sometimes I even proofread.

Since 2005, I've been writing about videogames and nerd culture. I often use my background as a programmer to analyze games. Other times I use my background as a cantankerous nitpicker. For the last few years I've focused on binge-friendly long-form retrospectives. I also did that one webcomic everyone remembers.

Some examples of my recent work:

My novel-sized retrospective on the Mass Effect trilogy.

The Blistering Stupidity of Fallout 3

What's wrong with Wolfenstein II and why was it so overrated?

What makes Batman: Arkham City so good and what does it have in common with Dark Souls?

Note that all of my content is free to the public. No paywalls. This writing is my main job, so if you become a supporter you're not just helping me create these articles -- you're actually helping to prevent my starvation. I really appreciate that.

While I release everything for free on my blog, I do sometimes post previews and behind-the scenes stuff for backers.

Thanks for your support and thanks for reading!
