Founded in 2005, Shanghaiist has emerged as one of the most popular English-language websites, covering news from China in bite-sized portions, for a diverse and international audience.

Forbes called Shanghaiist a “sophisticated, deliciously urbane city blog.” The New York Times thinks we are “ever-excellent.” And even the China Media Project describes us as a "venerable institution" and "a daily joy to read."

We've come a long way over the last 14 years, publishing over 37,000 stories read by millions around the world. In many instances, we're the first to break the news to an international audience.

We've become an indispensable read for many seeking to understand an everchanging China and leading international publications in all corners of the world rely on our work to inform their China coverage.

Now more than ever before, Shanghaiist needs your help.

As the media environment becomes increasingly challenging, your support is crucial in helping Shanghaiist continue to do what we’ve been doing since 2005 – bring unique stories from China to the world in the English language that would otherwise be missed in the mainstream media.

Over the years, many other independent English-language China news sites have come and gone, but through sheer grit and gumption, we have somehow managed to stick around. That we've managed to come this far is something of a miracle in itself.

We believe in offering our content free and available to all, and so have not chosen to erect a paywall. And to retain our independent voice, we decided not to turn to investors.

But the day-to-day strain of sustaining this operation is a real sword of Damocles hanging over our heads that can threaten to shut down our site anytime.

So for the first time in our history, we’re appealing to you for help.

If you have enjoyed and benefited from our work, or if you believe, as we do, that Shanghaiist’s voice is an important one to have, please consider being a patron.

Pledge any amount you're comfortable with, from as low as $1 a month, so we can continue bringing you the stories that you love to read.

* New patrons will be charged the day they become a patron, then on the 1st of the month going forward.
