Your support allows for a thriving project.

This tier will bring you my deep and everlasting gratitude, a warm welcome to join in the conversation, and a copy of each chapter (zine) of the graphic novel as it's created. I'll share images from my work in progress, and send you a regular surprise gift (a couple of postcards, a mini-zine, a handmade notebook, for example).

Your name will appear on the acknowledgements page, and as soon as the graphic novel (Why I Don't Come and Visit You) is published, I'll send you a copy.

Every month.... As a super-patron, (aka Saccharomyces boulardii, my favourite probiotic at the moment!), you'll be able to commission a handmade greeting card or postcard-sized illustration from me, whether it's a birthday card to a friend or a depiction of your deepest desire. I'll also invite you to a monthly Zoom dinner-party, where I'll update you on the project and we can eat together and chat about books, graphic novels, writing and illustration, and I'll fill you in about plans for the upcoming month.

You'll get to share in my process and deliberations, and participate in polls when I'm faced with any big (or not so big) decisions regarding what to include, where to go next with the story, what to draw and research, etc.

About

Hi, I'm Shaun Levin, a writer and an artist. Welcome to my Patreon :)

You know, it's easy to hide what's invisible to the eye. And sometimes, because you think it's invisible, you forget that it's a story that wants to be told. For the past few years I've wanted to write the full story of what it's like to live with IBS, an invisible disability that has shaped my life since my early 20s when I served in the army at a time of war. Having a chronic illness has also made me the writer and artist I am today: fascinated by the body and its impact on our psychology, and also a hyper-awareness to the drama of movement in the city. In many ways, IBS has been my secret. It's a messy condition to talk about, never mind create a whole book out of, and especially when it's linked to subjects like PTSD, shame, anxiety, and, on a more basic level – pooh!

It's that kind of graphic graphic novel. The graphic novel feels like the perfect form to show what it's like to live with a disability that's easy to hide, yet one that takes its toll on the spirit and the practicalities of day to day living. It's also – I'm discovering – a great way to tell a story that needs more than "just" words.

The working title is Why I Don't Come and Visit You, which I feel captures some of the complexity behind a simple invitation from a friend to come and visit, and places the spotlight on the most difficult part of living with a bowel condition: travel, leaving the house, getting from A to B!

Over the past 20 years or so, I've written several works of fiction about love, sex, painting, trauma, being an artist, being queer, being an immigrant, living in different places and languages, and as a creative writing teacher, I've also written a series of guides for writers. The plan is to bring all of these themes and experiences to my graphic novel, along with my experiments and fumblings in illustration and drawing, as well as my newfound love of bookbing.

Each chapter of the graphic novel will start out as a zine, all of which will then be collated to make the graphic novel.

Putting together Why I Don't Come and Visit You is going to be the kind of journey I love – intense, creative, unpredictable, enriching – and I hope you'll join me for the duration. The plan is to complete a first draft by early 2021, and then refine and publish the graphic novel by the end of the year.
Goals
9% complete
Money is time, and with this amount of support, I'll be able to take more time off from my teaching, admin and general fretting to create more illustrations, more goodies, and complete the graphic novel sooner.
