Hi. I'm Shawn Bailey and I'm a starving artist. Okay, okay. If you've seen me trying to fish my wallet out of my jeans at the drive thru, then you know I'm not actually starving. #ThingsThatAreHardForFatPeople. But the metaphor is apt in other ways.

I'm an author of supernatural horror novellas, assorted short stories, blog posts, newspaper articles, and poetry. I've written for news aggregators and had my short stories turned into podcasts. I've had poetry chosen two years running for a festival compilation, and have written for an alternative paper out of Huntsville, AL for around eight years. I'll throw some links out below.

But writing doesn't pay the bills... yet. I don't want to kid myself, or you dear reader, about sustaining my family by my writing skills alone. Just health insurance and car insurance add up to almost $2,000/month. You're human. You can extrapolate. My job helps with that sort of stuff, but I'd like to spend more time writing. That's where you come in.

Why I need Patrons

The main reason is the psychological push created through expectation. You pay for me to create and therefore I must. Kind of like when you know your friend will expect you at the gym after work, so you can't just buy that over-sized bar of Hershey's Dark and Yuengling Dark (I not only write about dark things, I like dark things in general) and curl up in front of Netflix. I'll have to be at the keyboard, producing in lieu of consuming.

How will your patronage help

As writers, we sometimes wonder if anyone is even reading what we're putting out. Thanks to Amazon metrics, we can now know exactly how many pages are being shared and read. But take it from me, when one person contacts you and thanks you for writing a poem, that means more than all those pages put together. Patreon allows a closer relationship between the writer and the appreciative reader. This is what drives people to write in a prolific manner. #PossibleStardomAlso

What do you get

This is the fun part. Everyone will get access to Patreon only posts. Some of my work, like poetry, I'll continue to share via my blog, but Patrons will get it first and may get content not published elsewhere, like the story behind the poetry. Exclusive content is the big thing here. You'll get advanced copies, signed copies, pics of working hot water heaters, answers to your questions, and maybe a chapbook if you're good boys and girls.

I'm setting up three categories:
  • Super-Ego: This is what most people see when they interact with an artist. This is the filtered, Pre-Frontal Cortex stuff. You see the art, maybe a clip or two of an interview, a signed book (unless you're the one waiting on David Sedaris at a Barnes and Noble! Jesus Christ man, how many readers do you have!)
  • Ego: This is more of a Between Two Ferns thing. What makes this person tick. Maybe a personal story or two. A little behind the scenes, mentality wise.
  • Id: This is the Inception level stuff. And to be honest, maybe once you get here you'll want to turn around and leave. You'll get whatever primordial shit comes pouring out of my Amygdala.

When I tried my hand at Inquisitr:
My Blog

There's a horror novella out there you can find for yourself. I emailed the Patreon staff and asked a very specific question about what counts as adult on here (once flagged as adult, no one can find you in search results! Hopefully this will change.) Turns out that if, out of all your writings, you have one link to a novella that has one short love scene near the very end, then you would have to flag your Patreon site as adult. That's a little maddening, but technically speaking, I'm only mentioning that there's one out there and not linking to it. So there. My site is now PG-13.

The poetry can mostly be found on my blog, but the winning entries for the Limestone Dust Poetry Festival are gone forever. The main person behind it discontinued everything once she was done with it. I think Uniform was one of the winners. Also, here's my buddy's website. She's got a lot of things going on.

I wrote articles for the Valley Planet in Huntsville, AL for around 8 years, on and off. Due to our publisher's untimely and unexpected passing, the paper and the website are gone. God bless you Jill. You are missed by many.

Lastly, I tried to put pics in here and they just wouldn't take, so I'll try them in my posts. I think there's a different GUI for that.

So click that reward button and start getting access to the inside of my head.

If I can get 100 readers hungry for my next story, that gets me thinking that yeah, maybe a full time, writing-only future just might exist for me.

I pledge to write at least 10 hours a week no matter what, and provide proof of said toils through delivering actual work to you, dear readers.
