Karen Degi is creating Software

TL;DR – If you think I do awesome things, feel free to throw money at me. :)

I am a software engineer, and I'm disappointed in my industry and in the world it's helped to create. I'm disappointed in the products we provide for consumers, which exploit psychology to make us addicted and miserable to feed into profits. I'm disappointed in the work environments we've created, which demand more hours at less consistent times and have normalized unhealthy emotional states and behavior patterns. I'm tired of everyone treating each other as numbers, as metrics, as cogs in a machine, as resources to wring profit from. I know I can't fix the whole world, but I'm hoping I can make a small difference, somehow, for someone.

I want to create software that excites me, that I believe contributes to creating a better world. I want to write about my experiences, my challenges, and my successes in hopes that it will pave a path for others to pursue a more values-driven, compassionate course. I want to help people. I want to experiment with anything I can think of that uses my skills to make a world where real, vulnerable people can interact with one another in healthier, more authentic ways. Even if it's just a little bubble where people can escape from the rest of the world to do that. I don't know what that looks like yet, and I'm at even more of a loss on how to approach monetizing it. Especially since most of the current common monetization models aren't particularly healthy.

This account is my way of telling myself I believe I am enough and that I add value to the world. It's permission to believe in my ideas and spend time and energy creating and sharing things that are important to me. Before anything else, it's a choice to become my own patron. It's a way to ask others to believe with me. Choosing to continue believing in a better world is sometimes lonely and discouraging. If I can get some support, it helps to combat that and remind me that others have confidence in me and appreciate that I keep trying. It helps me continue to have the courage of my convictions. Sometimes it's terrifying to walk away from things that aren't right, and knowing there's a community there for me makes it a little easier. Finally, I'm sure that whatever I end up making as a side project, it will end up having actual monetary costs for servers and such. I'm hopeful that money from this can cover those costs.

More specifically, I hope to make:
  • Software
I'm not sure exactly what this software will do yet. It's important to me to be able to experiment with a bunch of different things.
  • Blog posts
There are already a couple posts there. Check it out and see if you like them!
  • A list of links/resources/products/companies that seem to me to be positive influences in the world
I'd like to live as much as I can away from bad influences on my mental health, and I'd like to support people doing things that seem more focused on improving the world than on making a profit. I'll share that list somewhere, so you can support them, too. :)

In my perfect world, I'll be releasing things once a week, so potentially up to 5 times per month. Please be aware of that when setting up your pledge, and cap your monthly amount accordingly if multiplying your per-release pledge by 4-5 doesn't fit in your budget. No hard feelings, I appreciate anything you choose to spend on me. I chose to do per-release rather than per-month because I'm not sure yet how consistent I'll actually be about releasing things, and I don't want to feel like I'm cheating people.

If you'd like to offer support in forms that aren't monetary, the following are also things I'd currently appreciate:
  • Share the link to my Patreon with others you think it might resonate with
  • Clicking the "recommend" button for my Medium posts that you like
  • Suggestions for other products/companies/people that belong on my list of positive influences in the world
  • Putting me in contact with middle school, high school, or early college students that would like tutoring in math or computer science. I miss tutoring, and would like to get back to doing it occasionally
  • Letting me know about great software engineering job openings
  • Help getting a creator image for my Patreon account
  • Help creating a cover picture for my Patreon account
  • Help making a Patreon video
Tiers
Pledge $1 or more per release
Thank you so much for joining me in this. I'm grateful for the support you're giving me, and I'll let you know what I'm thinking about for upcoming projects and you can offer opinions if you'd like.
Pledge $3 or more per release
I'll send out periodic emails talking about what's currently in the works, what's getting in the way, and which things you can expect to see soon. This is a bit more of a behind-the-scenes look at what's going on, before it's all ready to go. Also, you get everything in the previous category. Thank you for your generosity.
Pledge $5 or more per release
My blog posts will go to these patrons before the general public. Perhaps by hours, perhaps by days, I'm not really sure. There may also be some posts that I share here, but don't really want to post to the entire internet. Also, of course. everything in the previous categories. I appreciate your support.

When it makes sense to do so (i.e. when the infrastructure allows it), I'll include you in betas of new things I make. You'll get to see new things first, and I'll take your feedback into account before pushing the release to everyone. Also everything in the previous reward tiers, of course. This is a really generous amount of money to spend supporting me - I'm flattered and deeply grateful. Thank you so much.

Everything above, plus we'll have a slack channel where we can all hang out. I'll be around in that channel as often as I can be and would love to chat about things with you guys and see you connecting with each other. I know there are other ways to create community and connect, but having a smaller group with more real-time interactions appeals to me. Also, wow. This is an amazing amount of money to be offering me. I appreciate it a super lot.

Everything above, and I'll find (at least) an hour every month to chat with you personally. This is a huge amount of money to be offering me to follow my dreams. I appreciate it. Thank you.

Wow. Thank you. I don't know what to say. Obviously, this tier includes the rewards from all of the above tiers, but I want to do something more. At this level, I'd like to make sure that I'm giving you something that you will really appreciate, though - so we'll talk about what exactly that looks like. I fully expect each of the rewards at this level to be something different, and that's great.
Goals
$9 of $13 per release
When we reach this funding goal, I'll contact each patron and make plans to hang out for an hour or two. If you're far away, it may be online hanging out, but I suspect we can still figure out something fun to do. Thank you for supporting me.
