About She is the Universe
SHE IS THE UNIVERSE IS A GLOBAL PLATFORM DESIGNED TO AMPLIFY THE VOICES OF TEENAGE GIRLS FROM AROUND THE WORLD.We look to inspire, empower and offer girls the support they need to stand in their own stories and to pursue their dreams, through storytelling, mentorship and community.
During the first phase of this project we are producing a video series of 111 short videos, giving girls aged between 13 and 19 from 15+ countries around the world, of all shapes, sizes, colors, languages and cultural and socio-economic backgrounds, a platform, so they can use their voice and tell their life stories.
Check it all out here: http://www.sheistheuniverse.org/
The quest is to travel 6 continents, interviewing these girls, document their stories and give us all a window into their hearts and souls.
Founded by storyteller Laura Peña, this project is taking her on a once in a lifetime adventure around the globe. So far, she has filmed 51 interviews with girls in 21 cities and 10 countries. Including the United States, (her home for the past 14 years), The Dominican Republic (her country of origin), Colombia, Peru, Iceland, The UK, The Netherlands, Denmark, Spain and Portugal.
Some of these interviews made up the collection of 6 stories released for Season One last year, and will feature in Season Two, to be released on October 11, 2019, International Day of the Girl.
Where to next? Laura is set to travel to Australia, Thailand and Vietnam later this year. And in 2020 (and beyond) the project will reach countries such as China, South Africa, Kenya, Cuba, Haiti, and South Korea.
Why? We are exploring the question of what it means to be a girl in today’s age. We discuss their passions and dreams, hopes, fears, beliefs, struggles and their stories of success, defeat and opportunities. All of these things are unique to their life and their different cultures, but at the same time universal, which is powerful to learn and share with the rest of the world.
As Laura travels the globe, shooting, editing and writing, she is also sharing her own journey of following her passion and bringing this vision and mission to life.
We are also hosting screenings and Q & A’s in cities that Laura visits, which is great opportunity to come together and learn more about the project.
The purpose of this platform is to support in building these girls’ confidence by allowing them to be seen and heard. One girl's confidence can build another girl’s confidence, that can build another girl’s confidence and so on.
This all started with a question; what do these women-in-the-making need from all of us, to fulfil their potential? We are traveling far and wide with a camera in hand and curious minds, to ask them ourselves.
JOIN OUR COMMUNITYWe are truly grateful that you are here and we'd love for you to support this project and become
part of this incredible, global community.
Any contribution you're able to make will be put towards the following elements and ensuring this project is sustainable and continues to have an even greater global impact, by filling the world with stories of girls told by girls.
For an overview of how Patreon works in general, they’ve got a great explainer HERE to explain how it works. Essentially: you give Patreon your credit card # (or paypal) and you’re charged $1 (or more, if you choose) at the start of every month to support us and everything this project does.
This project was started self-funded by Laura and funded by 42 founding members which has been an incredible start but we want this project to grow and to capture stories from the rest of the world. We are going on the road again soon to Australia, Asia and Africa! The She is the Universe picture is not complete until we have reached every one of these places.
Our main goals with funding:
>> Release more stories; funding the editing to ensure all the stories already captured are released as soon as possible, we already have 51 wonderful stories filmed and each takes at least two weeks of post-production time (we currently have over 100 hours of magical footage!)
>> Reach more girls; we journey to meet each girl in person wherever they are and we want to ensure Laura can reach every continent and amplify as many girls' voices from as many backgrounds as possible
>> Fund more scholarships; contributing to the Scholarship & Mentoring programs we have created, to ensure these girls have the best chance at achieving their goals and getting the much needed support to do so. Including a scholarship to college and mentoring opportunities, for girls in developing countries.
Our secondary goals with funding:
>> Hosting Girls' Circles; to host in person workshops inviting girls to come together and talk about their dreams & challenges and deepen this connection and community, knowing they are not alone!
>> Software & hosting costs to run She is the Universe (website, adobe etc)
>> Paying our part-time staff to assist Laura in managing this community and global project
Thank you again for your support, we look forward to sharing this journey with you!
And thank you for showing up for our girls and our future.
The way forward is together!
With so much love,
Laura Peña and the SITU team x
We will celebrate by having our founder Laura Peña, share a slam-poetry style poem about the project!
Thank you for supporting our girls and our future.
