WHO I AM – WHAT I DO…
My name is Shelley Koon, and I’m an URBEX photographer. What is URBEX photography? It’s the exploration of urban spaces that have been abandoned and for the most part left to decay. Why do I do this?Because these forgotten locations have history; from long defunct factories, to asylums and hospitals designed to assist those in need, to homes that saw both victory and heartbreak of the families that resided in them, each place tells a story of our past.

I’m drawn to these lost structures not only to their stories but also to the richly textured tapestry of peeling paint, broken moldings, fractured glass, and rotting wood of the framing. The colors are brilliant and at times otherworldly.Beauty in decay.

WHAT IS PATREON?
Patreon is a crowdfunding site similar to Kickstarter but different in that instead of funding a large one-time project, you’re able to help provide continuous funding to an artist whose work you admire by “tipping” them on either a project or monthly basis. These dollars go toward the real-world cost that allows the artist to continuously produce content.

WHAT WILL I DO WITH THE TIPS/DONATIONS I RECEIVE THOUGH PATREON?
While I shoot digitally, there is still a great deal of cost involved in the art I create that includes (but is not limited to):

  • Gear (camera bodies, lenses, filters, batteries and chargers, tripods)
  • Printing for shows (paper, framing, professional services for oversized works)
  • Contest entry fees and shipping
  • Editing (computer, software)
  • Workshops and Education (locations workshops, formal schooling, and online training)
  • Travel costs (gas, lodging and food)

While your tip/donation may go toward any of the costs listed above, the most common will be travel to locations as it is consistently the most costly aspect of URBEX photography.
For a quick snapshot of where a portion of your tip/donation would go, here is the cost of the most recent workshop I attended:

  • Workshop fee (4 hour session on location) = $150
  • Gas = $60
  • Lodging (2 nights) = $120
  • Food = $45
  • TOTAL COST = $375

So where do I go? Currently local east coast sites within a 4 – 6 hour drive from where I live.Your tips/donations will go toward my short-term goal adding more of these local trips to my current calendar.

So what’s my stretch goal?

EUROPE (and other international locations)! My ultimate long-term goal is to travel abroad and photograph the urban ruins there. With your help – I can do it! Any amount of tip/donation is greatly appreciated – it all ends up and helps get me to my short and long-term goals.
