My name is Shel Raphen. I have been writing and publishing surrealist poetry for the past 5 years, initially as part of the BRAVEFOLK poetry collective, and now independently. I have self-published two chapbooks digitally for free at https://datapup.info. My published chapbooks are about cults, mental health, and uncertainty.

My current poetry work in progress, tentatively titled (E)STRANGED//SELF, has nothing to do with cults. It is about the ways that we suppress, change, fragment, and are disconnected from ourselves in order to function in a Capitalist economy where we are required to "look employable" "act professional" and overall suck up to our bosses. About all the times you wanted to say something, do something, change something, but were too afraid of how it would impact your job prospects. About all the times you lied to your coworkers about your weekend. About fake smiles and complimenting customers. It is essentially a poetic adaptation of the essay Estranged Labor by Karl Marx.

For the past few years I have released all of my work for free, because my full-time job supports me financially enough that I didn't feel like I needed the money. I still don't need the money in this moment, but with major surgery, a change in employment, and moving to a new city on the horizon, in addition to my student debt once I complete graduate school next year, I figured that I might start needing the money in the near future. I still want to ensure that I can release my work for free, but if you enjoy my work and want to support me, it would mean a lot. I don't put any tracking scripts on my website, datapup.info, so I have no idea how many people actually read my poetry unless they tell me personally. If you're not feeling up to that, hey, this is another way to show that you like what I do.

I have launched this Patreon now in order to ensure I can have reward tiers later. You are welcome to pledge now, but I don't intend to fully use this until after my current grad-school semester ends. Future tier rewards will include early access to poems before they are collected into chapbooks, physical printed editions of my chapbooks, miscellaneous unpublished poems that are good but unlikely to be included in a future chapbook due to being thematically unique, and being thanked and named in the back of my future chapbook(s).

I often work on non-poetry projects as well. I will try to find a way to integrate those into this Patreon if they start to take more of my focus.

For now though, your reward for pledging at any level is that I will try to find you on Twitter or Mastodon and bark @ you.
Tiers
Treat
$1 or more per month

At this tier you are metaphorically putting a treat in my mouth, and I'll bark at you on twitter (or Mastodon) as a thanks!

Goals
$43 of $150 per month
This is how much Dragon dictation software would cost me, which would really help me with longform writing as my hEDS-like G-HSD induced elbow pain can make typing rly painful by the time i'm home from work
