About
A former theatrical painter, designer and propmaker, Shing Yin Khor makes work and comics about awkward, charming, and awkwardly charming creatures trapped in a world of bumbling science and human fallibility. Her themes are inspired by historical hoaxes, old museums, cabinets of curiosities, pre-Linnean taxonomy, and her multicultural upbringing; her palettes are inspired by the more obnoxiously colourful parts of nature, especially invertebrates.
She sculpts, paints, and makes comics.
She is a member of the Circus Posterus artist collective.
Born in Malacca, a port city of Malaysia – and raised between cultures on a diet of fantasy tropes and post-colonial detritus – Shing currently calls Los Angeles home.

Hi! My name is Shing Yin Khor, and I'm a cartoonist, painter and sculptor. I make lots of art and comics, mostly around the themes of monsters and diversity and autobiography, sometimes even all at the same time. I also run Sawdust Press, which is a small press devoted to telling strange little stories, often from an intersectional feminist perspective.
Your contribution to my Patreon campaign supports the following work:
The Center for Otherworld Science
I write and paint The Center for Otherworld Science, a comic about monsters, people, and corrupt institutions(in this case, a sort of cryptozoological one). I try to produce a chapter every few months, which has traditionally been between 7-12 watercoloured pages(about a page every week). While all my characters do spend most of their time in biohazard suits, the three leads are all women of colour(two of whom are not straight). You can get the first and the second issues on Gumroad, and read the most recent chapters here.
As part of the Center for Otherworld Science narrative, which spans about a hundred years, I also produce lots of paintings and sculptures that fit into this world. My sculptures and illustrations are inspired by historical hoaxes, old museums, post colonial detritus, cabinets of curiosities and pre-Linnean taxonomy.

Blood Root
Through Sawdust Press, I publish Blood Root, a comic anthology that contains short comics about ghost stories, man made myths, moody psychological horror and fantasy, and personal stories about strange happenings. We specifically seek out a diverse roster of stories, characters and creators. While I do not publish my own comics in this, I edit and fund this anthology, and pay creators for their contributions. By supporting me, you help me pay other wonderful artists and writers. Our first issue was published in July 2014, and we have completed issues 2 and 3 as well! You can download Issue 1 of Blood Root for free on Gumroad, and we are in production for future issues.
Tiny Adventure Journal
Tiny Adventure Journal is my comic journal about travel and interesting places. It's where I document my love for cheap travel, weird museums, Paul Bunyan statues, abandoned places, most animals that are not ostriches, and odd Americana.

Memoir, and more!
I also write autobiographical comics that are focused on race and the immigrant experience, as well as the occasional embarrassing and/or dirty memoir comic, which have been published and/or syndicated on The Toast, Bitch Magazine and Upworthy. You can generally find them all here. Your Patreon subscription helps to fund all this work!

I am also a sculptor and installation artist, and while pledging to my Patreon campaign will give you access to a lot of behind-the-scenes blogging about it, that work is already is a self sustaining job, and I am not raising money for it! You may get some stuff from these projects in your Care Package Subscription level, although anything I feel is too divergent from my normal body of work will be just be considered extras.
Care Package Subscription:
The Care Package subscription is my way of taking you along on ALL my art-related adventures! Every month, you will receive some work that I have produced that month. In addition, you may also receive little souvenirs from my travels, photographs, and other ephemera. The work you receive can include limited edition prints, mini figures, comics, pins, postcard sets and more - but rest assured that the retail value of the work will be equivalent of what you paid for it. Having this subscription gives me the opportunity to experiment with small scale and limited edition projects.
The Sawdust Press Subscription
The Sawdust Press subscription means that you will receive everything that Sawdust Press prints from the point at which you subscribe forward, including our limited edition zines. Occasionally, we will also include a Patreon exclusive variant cover or print. It is not a monthly mailing - we send them out every few months, when we have one or two new books or zines.
