About Shionの使い

How are you doing? I'm Shion and I love Gaki no Tsukai / japanese comedy shows.
I've been translating full-lenght Gaki Episodes, Lincoln segments, Gottsu Ee Kanji kontos, manzai skits and other j-comedy related stuff since 2014, and I've even worked on few No Laughing Batsu Games along with Team Gaki.
Translating Gaki no Tsukai is not an easy task, but it's surely worth it. What makes it hard to translate J-comedy & Gaki no Tsukai (to me, at least)? Here are the reasons:
• First of all, english is not my native language (I'm italian), and I know I can make typos and silly mistakes. I work really hard in order to avoid them, and it can be challenging sometimes.
• When it comes to official subs / translations, the translator is provided a script for the product he's working on. We fansubbers don't have any scripts; we only rely on what we hear and on occasional telops (aka the colored impact captions you usually see on j-comedy, which only appear occasionally). That makes translating J-comedy (especially high-paced manzai skits & old tv shows clips) pretty hard sometimes, but also fun & challenging!
• Japanese is - overall - a difficult language, and when it comes to comedy there are way more implications, such as puns, references, idioms and technical terms you won't normally find in a - let's say - full-lenght movie. Of course there's a limited space to work on subs (can't have too much CPS for a single line or else the viewer won't be able to read it), but I'm always aiming at making clear translations and explainations of bits, whether by in-screen notes and comments on my wordpress. You can't say translating is kind of a constant research!
My dream is to be a professional translator (in italian, I guess hahah) specialized in tv-shows and media, and my other dream is to see more J-comedy around the world, subtitled and accessible to anyone, everywhere.
My love for j-comedy is what made me keep on translating Gaki no Tsukai and other shows, but translating is also something which takes time and space, and there's not always time to do it.
If you love j-comedy as well and you like what I'm doing, please consider a donation: it can motivate me to keep on doing what I'm doing even when things will be busier and more difficult!
Thanks for reading, have a good day!
