About SICK

SICK is an international print magazine by chronically ill & disabled people. We are an independent magazine that receives no funding. Our aim is to remain ad-free, and to increase our contributor rates over time. Contributor rates for each issue are dependant on sales from the previous issue, donations, and any other products we produce.

For transparency, our currently monthly maintenance costs are £32 (website hosting, online shop, google suite, bank account). The cost to produce issue 3 (including all contributor fees, design fee, & first print run) was £4,940. The majority of money spent on each issue is directly from sales in our online shop. For example, issue 2 has produced revenue of £4,718 from 471 sales across a 17-month period (not including stockist sales), which was used to produce issue 3. I do not pay myself, though it is something I would like to do as I am unable to work another job.

There are many things I am working towards and hope to achieve with SICK that I currently do not have the funds to do. I would love to have more administrative assistance, the ability to donate issues to libraries and provide free issues to disabled people on no income, work with a distributor to reach more stores, make a more accessible website, produce more merch and other illness-related products, create bigger issues, and much more. With more funds, we would also be able to potentially increase production (health and body dependant). After publishing an issue, we essentially cannot begin work on another one until we have a similar amount of funds in our account as we did for the previous issue. As of November 2021, we are a little less than halfway to our funding goal for issue 4. Basically, more money = more SICK!

We use sliding-scale pricing options in an effort to remain as affordable as possible, knowing that many sick & disabled people live in poverty or low/no income. We hope that those who are able to afford to pay more or offer monetary support will do so in an effort to keep SICK an accessible, ongoing project. If you would prefer to make a one-time donation, you can do so here: https://sickmagazine.co.uk/support-us/

THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING SICK & DISABLED WRITERS AND ARTISTS!
