About SIMPLIFY Drawing & Painting

Welcome to SIMPLIFY Drawing & Painting's Patreon Channel.

SIMPLIFY Drawing & Painting was founded by Realist Artist Alex Tzavaras to teach the traditional methods Artists used to Draw and Paint from life, up until the start of the 20th century. In a way that was clear and easy to Understand.

While there are many portrait and landscape painting videos available to watch by many of today’s leading realist Artists, there are very few places outside of Atelier schools where you can really learn about the fundamentals of drawing and painting from life.

  • How to draw with accurate proportion
  • How to simplify light and dark tonal values
  • How to see and mix colour accurately
On this channel, you will have access to a series of straightforward exercises that have been specially designed to not only teach you these principles, but also give you practical experience of how they actually work.

All the demonstrations have been filmed from start to finish, in real-time, with in-depth instruction, explaining Alex's Process in detail. The courses on this channel include:
Introduction to Mass Drawing (Parts 1-4)
Developed in the 19th century, Mass Drawing it involves simplifying your subject into large underlying shapes or “masses”. It is essential for working directly or “Alla Prima” with oil paint. On this course, you will learn:
  • A new way of seeing that will enable you to recognise the large abstract forms that make up your subject.
  • A system of comparative measurement that will help you to draw with accurate proportions.
  • How to create 3D form using light and dark tonal values.
Mass Drawing is the foundation of Alex’s whole approach to painting. To get the full benefit of his teaching, you should start with this course.

Advanced Mass Drawing with the Plaster Cast (Parts 1-3)
Up until the start of the 20th century, plaster casts were an important tool used to train representational artists. They are a really useful bridge between still life and more complicated subjects like portraits and figure.

On this course, you will be applying the principles you learned on the introduction to mass drawing course to the more challenging subject of an antique plaster cast. You do not need a cast for this exercise as you will be working from the high-quality reference images provided.

Advanced Mass Drawing with the Plaster Cast – Joan of Arc Portrait (Parts 1-3)
Continuing with plaster casts, on this course you will learn how to apply the Mass Drawing method to a portrait. This monochrome cast painting exercise is a great introduction to portrait painting.

Essentials of Colour – TEMPERATURE (Parts 1-3)
The first course in a series focusing on the fundamental principles that can help us to see and mix colour accurately.

You will often hear Artists refer to warm and cool colours. The exercises on this course will show you exactly what these terms mean and how understanding Colour Temperature can help us make sense of the infinite variety of colours we see in nature.

Essentials of Colour – Intensity & Saturation (Part 1)
SATURATION, INTENSITY or CHROMA describes the degree to which a particular colour differs from grey. The purer a colour is, the less it is mixed with black, white or grey, the more saturated it is and the brighter it will appear. This is another really important principle we need to understand in order to see and mix colours accurately.

A Female Portrait Using the Zorn Palette (Parts 1-4)
An Alla Prima portrait painting demonstration from life, using the Zorn Palette, Named after the 19th Century Swedish painter Anders Zorn, it is limited palette consisting of just four colours, Titanium White, Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Red Light and Ivory Black. It is particularly convenient for mixing skin colours, making it an ideal palette for students to begin Portrait painting with.
