About Sister Ursuline

(Banner photo c/o Mix Tape)

Good morrow, witches!

If you're new here, I'm a singer-songwriter and cellist; I create songs that draw heavily on historical anecdotes, characters, architecture, folklore - and in performance I use looping to create a live cello choir and vocal harmonies. Many of you know me from my sojourn with Rasputina in 2015 - I joined Rasputina on their Summer tour as first chair cellist and backing vocalist, covering most of North America with the band. That year I also independently released my first EP, Dramatic, Grim and Humorous. Many of you have stuck with me since, as I turned my focus towards live performance over the following years.

Since then, in addition to performing solo I've collaborated with artists such as fellow bandmate Luis Mojica, spoken word poet Candy Royalle, and sex clown Betty Grumble, as well as performing in the Dark Mofo-commissioned installation House of Mirrors during its opening at Brisbane's Powerhouse.

Why Patreon?

Music is an immediate, communicative art form. It often shows us how we feel before we can even consciously acknowledge it ourselves. It exists to be released, shared, and to open a dialogue with others, and helps many of us to feel less alone. Patreon is a way for me to reach out to this community while allowing me to continue creating independently. As of the time of writing (we're deep in 2020, and COVID-19 is ravaging the globe) live gigs are off the table. Pledging your support on Patreon means removing some of my financial pressures, allowing me to create and release more work to you in real time. As a completely independent artist, I pay for everything; something that a lot of people outside the industry may not be aware of. If you're listening to an independent artist (that is, not signed to a label) on Spotify - they paid for that digital distribution to happen. If you're buying merchandise from their website - they paid upfront for the production, leaving them out of pocket until sales come through. This isn't to complain - I love operating independently; it means that I retain all the rights to my own work (something that artists who sign forfeit), and that I'm free to write a 9 minute ballad about granite lighthouses because that's just what I happen to find profoundly interesting (again, something I could never do on a label). The reality is - this operation costs money. Most artists make art regardless of whether they're earning - that doesn't mean they should have to. If you find value in my work, if it makes your life better in any measurable way, if it inspires you or brings you joy - please consider pledging here.

I'll be sharing my life and process - what goes into creating these songs, whether that's historical source material, literature, my obsession with lighthouses, or anything else that fascinates me. When you pledge, you'll join an exclusive community of patrons - depending on the tier you choose, you'll gain access to works in progress, demos, blogs, random filmed surprises, the ability to message me directly and vote in polls; things that aren't released on wider social media until they've reached their polished final form. While crowdfunding platforms like Kickstarter fund a specific project, Patreon is a form of ongoing patronage for my creative life.

Welcome!

Welcome to my Patreon, and welcome to this brave new world of arts patronage.
