About Skin on Sundays

When I was in my early 20's, I read Walt Whitman's poem "I Sing the Body Electric." The speaker of the poem asserts that the body is just important to life as the soul, no less. The poem impacted me in such a way that the deeper current of my work since then has become a movement toward understanding the connection between the metaphysical and physical self, the mind/soul and the body. This was an unconscious movement in myself that I only uncovered recently. It must be at the root of why I created a project where I write my words on people's skin.

My censored physiopoems are on my Instagram feed @skinonsundays. My uncensored physiopoems, all self-portraits are only going to be here. I upload a new set of uncensored photos every month with a new poem. It is important to remember that being unabashedly nude is not inherently shameful, and a woman does not have to be modest to be respected. Nakedness in art has the power to open people's minds to see that and can serve as a bridge from objectification to admiration of the body.

For fellow poets out there, if you're not interested in uncensored work, I also have an education-growth-based option available: detailed feedback and exposure for your poetry. Aside from my lifelong fascination with literature and writing, I have a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from the Inland Northwest Center for Writers in Spokane, Washington. My specialty focus was poetry. I've been a professional writer and editor since I graduated in 2010 and I would love to help others flourish as writers as well.

Your patron-ship is an expression of support. You see me. You value my work and all the creativity and energy and love that goes into it. It adds something positive to your life. If you have felt connected with, moved by, or found comfort or wisdom in my work, my mission as a writer has been fulfilled. Supporting my artistic endeavors allows me to continue creating things that add beauty and value to the world, mine, yours, and at large.

xo,
Jessica
