Since 2002, I've been writing the blog Slacktivist, now part of the "progressive Christian" channel at Patheos.com. (While I'm an evangelical Christian, the graduate of an evangelical seminary and a veteran of decades of work in the evangelical nonprofit world, I got bumped from the "evangelical channel" there due to being a Satanic baby-killer who wants to cram gay marriage down America's throat. This was, perhaps correctly, perceived as a bad fit with the "evangelical" brand.)

If you've ever heard of Slacktivist, it's probably due to my ongoing page-by-page exploration of the Left Behind series, which may well be the Worst Books Ever Written. These books are Very Bad, and they are Very Bad in every possible way: style, plot, theme, characterization, storytelling, politics, theology, gender, basic humanity. This makes them instructively bad. As the Cat in the Hat said, the way to find a certain something is to find out where it's not. So anyone who is interested in good writing, good storytelling, good theology, or good politics can learn a lot from the Left Behind series.

I also write about Other Things, including, but not limited to: the separation of church and state, marriage equality, why war is usually a bad idea, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, sin, manufactured housing, payday lending, Reinhold Niebuhr, the slavery-defending roots of "biblical inerrancy," creationism, hermeneutics, the perpetual exploitation of the poor, racism, dirty jokes, immigration, the book of Jonah, subsidiarity, the politics of resentment, baseball, religious tribalism, horrifying biblical passages, boom de yada, the folklore of Hell, indignation addiction, the religious right, and my original "Saved by the Bell" erotic fan fiction.

I used to make a living as a copy editor for a daily newspaper. Since daily newspapers have decided they no longer need copy editors, I no longer make a living. I do this instead.
