Why Smart Politics?

Smart Politics is
a nonprofit organization commited to achieving political, social, economic, and environmental justice for all people. Our immediate goals are to transform the polarization and hate of the current political climate while putting Congress and the Presidency into the hands of caring, responsible, and capable leaders who share our priorities.

How is Smart Politics different?

Smart Politics is unique among existing progressive organizations. Instead of stoking polarization with wedge issues to mobilize our base and attract swing voters, we help progressives reach across the divide to shift public opinion and grow the movement for change.

What do we believe?

All people--even people we disagree with, such as conservatives and supporters of President Trump--are capable of changing their minds about politics. Unfortunately, we progressives often communicate in ways that reinforce their prior beliefs rather than helping them understand our point of view. To transform American politics, we must learn how to share our message in a way people who disagree with us can hear.

What is our  method?

We help others change their minds with Radical Conversations. Radical Conversations are challenging dialogues that expose people we disagree with to new ideas in an environment free from attack. Unlike in political arguments or debates, we focus on listening and understanding rather than refuting or rebutting. The goal of the conversation is not to "win," but to reach a place where the other person can listen to our perspective without becoming so defensive that they are incapable of reflecting on their own beliefs.

What do we do?

We teach our fellow activists how to have growth conversations using the Radical Conversation Cycle (RCC). Online, we teach webinars, provide ongoing education and support in our Facebook forum, and maintain a website with hundreds of educational resources. Offline, we run live workshops and consult with progressive candidates, campaigns, and volunteers across the country.

Smart Politics needs you!

Building and maintaining a nationwide training operation for progressive candidates, campaigns, volunteers, and advocates takes a lot of money. To sustain us through the 2018 election season and beyond, we are counting on you to become a patron and encourage other progressives you know to do so as well.

Why do we need money?

Despite what you might have heard from Betsy DeVos et al, educating people costs a lot. We managed to get by for a long time with one full-timer (Karin Tamerius) who works for free (or, in the words of her husband, "negative salary") and a whole army of amazing volunteers who do this work in addition to their day jobs, but it turns out we can't save the world for free. So, we hired Chuck Tyler, our new CEO and full-time professional campaign trainer. In addition, as we expand the reach and effectiveness of our operation, we continue to incur a growing list of incidental expenses like travel, lodging, video conferencing, web hosting, conference fees, legal expenses, and printing.

What's in it for you?

If you've read this far, you know the future of our nation and planet depend on radical change. By becoming our patron, you will take a critical step toward sharing the progressive message in a way others can hear, flipping the House, removing President Trump from office, and fighting the spread of propaganda that is undermining our democracy. In other words, you will be an American hero. (Oh, and there are some perks you can look forward to too assuming you're into that kind of thing.)

Thank you for your support! We couldn't do this without you. Plus, your descendants will be super-grateful that you went out of your way to leave them a habitable, just, and democratic world.

Sincerely,

Chuck, Karin, & the rest of the Smart Politics team
