About

Hiya friends! First I want to thank you for clicking the link to check out my Patreon because that’s so cool that you’re here. Welcome! So who am I and what am I doing? Well, lemme give you the rundown.

Who am I?

My name's Abbey. You might know me from fandom, the tech industry, or from production-related Hollywood spaces. If you don’t know me: when I’m not writing a memoir, video editing or being a giant nerd and thinking about Star Trek, I’m working a day job in administrative and operational support.

I’m also an artist. I paint abstract art. I took up painting in 2015 after re-reading Natalie Goldberg’s “Writing Down the Bones.” She was explaining her appreciation for teaching workshops to new writers because it always put her back into a “beginner mindset.” A beginner mindset was a fresh start where anything was possible. The way she described it made it sound both humbling and rejuvenating. At that time I was between jobs, depressed and struggling with my writing and other creative endeavors. I hadn’t picked up a paintbrush since high school art class and wasn’t entirely sure it was going to be something I enjoyed.

The beginner’s mindset sounded like something I needed. I bought a craft paint set for $10 and some small canvas boards. I couldn’t draw well and I felt awkward trying to paint representational. So I started smearing paint across the canvas. That opened my soul. It gave me new and exciting things to try, to learn and I was having fun for the first time in ages.

5 years later: I have 6 shelves in my closet containing finished and incomplete art. I’ve sold dozens of paintings, connected with some amazing artists around the world, and explored how to express myself with composition and color. I’ve learned so much and can’t wait to learn more.

There was a 2 year gap where I wasn’t painting due to grief from my grandmother’s death, followed by the depressive fallout and a job that was draining my soul. Life came after me fast. I needed to rest and recuperate and refill the creative well because I wasn’t able to connect with anything.

I eventually found another job that came with some stability. But then 2020 happened. I’ve been furloughed from work and the future of returning to my day job is uncertain. In the meantime I have been painting like I am making up for lost time and it’s been exhilarating. It feels like lightning has struck and energized me. All the creative energies that have been lying dormant as I healed from the last few years were now awake. I am practicing acrylic pours, being patient while learning more about color mixing and blending and composition. I'm also learning a ton about digital art and photography right now.

How Patreon helps

Patreon is a great way to show support if you can’t afford a painting right now or don’t have the space for art. The Patreon community offers me a reliable financial cushion that helps with buying more tools and supplies while also helping with my living expenses as my income has been interrupted due to the pandemic.

I’m excited that I have more ideas than ever before that I NEED to try and I can’t wait to share my journey with you. Your continued support will contribute to the expansion of my art practice as I take steps towards promoting and selling my art in the form of originals, prints and other products. Be here every step of the way as I explore and push myself to new creative horizons in the form of digital art, mixed media and more. I have several other goals I'm working towards which you can check out below in more detail.

Support means everything

If you choose to show your support with a pledge: thank you SO MUCH!! Your support means the world to me. To show my gratitude I want to bring you along my journey and offer you some goodies in the process.

The tiered rewards vary but they will include sneak peeks of my artwork and WIPs, digital downloads of my art as calendars, polls to help me figure out what I should try next, behind the scenes video and photo of my studio, thank you postcards, time-lapse videos and vlogs. At the higher tiers I offer a custom digital abstract portrait of your pet/child/loved one, or an art print/original canvas after your first pledge. Check out the tiers for more details and please message me if you have any questions.

How it works

Upon your first pledge you will be immediately charged for the current month and then on the 1st of every month after that. If you need to cancel that’s fine! You can cancel anytime. I understand everyone’s situation is different and the world is upside down--especially now. You can also upgrade your pledge during the month and will be charged the difference if you wish to gain access to a benefit at a higher tier for a month. Then you can lower your pledge later on if you choose. Each pledge is amazing and I value your support immensely, thank you so much!

Thank you again for coming to my Patreon and having a look around. Hope to see you soon!

Goals
$216.01 of $500 per month
I currently use my phone to photograph my art. That’s fine for sharing on social media and for small prints and stickers but awful for everything else. When I reach this goal I'll be able to upgrade my photography set-up which will result in better prints and my art on a wider variety of products. I’m aiming to get a 20MP DSLR (possibly refurbished through Canon or Nikon’s website) and purchase a photography lighting kit because my apartment has terrible light. A bonus with the lighting kit is that I'd be able to paint in the evenings which would be so awesome.
