soft/WALL/studs is a collaborative project between several artists, writers, filmmakers, art workers, and researchers in Singapore. Our activity has taken on many forms, in varying combinations over the past three years, from exhibitions, presentations, and performances, to esoteric expressions, hybrid gestures and more; hosting and supporting acts of amplification, communing, detournement, play, intervention, learning, maintenance... Weโ€™ve documented some of this on our website!

s/W/s (which weโ€™ve heard variably shortened to โ€œstudsโ€ or โ€œsoft wallโ€) began in 2016 and orbits around a physical space we share and create in. At the time, founding members Kenneth Loe, Luca Lum, Stephanie J. Burt, and Weixin Chong were searching for a studio to rent and produce in, and were fortunate to find a relatively affordable industrial unit in the neighbourhood of Geylang. Realising it could do more than just contain their personal artistic practices and processes of making, they started using the space to curate and show each otherโ€™s works as well as those of friends. Since then, arrivals and departures have reoriented this constellation, with twelve now entangled in the projectโ€™s branching potentials, alongside many more who have inspired, supported, or collaborated with us along the way.

In 2019, we extended our present lease for two more years, which represents a renewal of our commitment to creating in this context, and our desire for such a zone of independent activity to carry on. What we do with the space and with each other is evolving, but we hope to continue growing this web of collaboration, planning together.

โ€œAnd the plan is to invent the means in a common experiment launched from any kitchen, any back porch, any basement, any hall, any park bench, any improvised party, every night. This ongoing experiment with the informal, carried out by and on the means of social reproduction, as the to come of the forms of life, is what we mean by planning; planning in the undercommons is not an activity, not fishing or dancing or teaching or loving, but the ceaseless experiment with the futurial presence of the forms of life that make such activities possible.โ€

This patreon page is part of this evolution. Our space and activities have always been financially sustained by ourselves in a pooling of collective means, supplemented by donations during sporadic programmes. The truth is that even though there are twelve of us contributing to rent now, with shifting personal situations and structural challenges tied to precarious labour and perpetually rising rent, weโ€™ve been coming up short every month, and have had to make regular adjustments on contributions and rely more on running programmes โ€“ which also take time and energy while colouring what we perceive as worth the effort.

What we hope to do here is to cover that shortfall, ease up the pressure on each of us, and open up a pathway to be in more regular contact with our friends and supporters. Along this line, we also want to develop ways to offer use of our space and resources (including our libraries as already facilitated by wares) more actively. If you'd like to follow us in a continuation of what weโ€™ve been doing, and to witness things happening at a greater depth and frequency, a monthly contribution โ€“ of any amount โ€“ would be an immense help towards the sustainability of this project and space. Funds will go towards rent, programming, as well as maintenance of the space. We further hope this platform will be a way to get people interested in what we do, and perhaps realise what community even means,ย fundamentally transforming what we consists of while expanding what doing entails.

Currently, we are not offering any specific perks for patron tiers, but we wanted to set them up first for that possibility in the near future. The tiers reflect levels of contribution whereby we foreseeably could begin offering and disseminating rewards, though they should not be thought of here as a transaction in purchase of a commodity. Things we have in mind include: Broadcasts, blog posts, access to records/archives, whispers of future desires, publications, plans, old/new editions of our works, ephemera from events present & past, and objects/desiderata from the space. They may even become an opportunity to collaborate outside of physical boundaries.

Every bit helps, and we are immensely grateful for your generosity in deciding to support soft/WALL/studs!ย

If you are unable to make a financial contribution at this point, but would like to support us through other resources (donation of air-conditioning, technical equipment, furniture, services, time and knowledge, maintenance and logistical support, etc.) please do not hesitate toย get in touch.

$216 of $500 per month
covers the shortfall we currently face with rent, which frees us from having to worry too much about live fundraising during our events โ›“โš”โ›“
