I want to help artists grow and thrive.

For that purpose, I've spent years honing the methods contained in this patreon to help illustrators level up.  I even wrote a book about non-traditional education. While there will be plenty of skill building exercises for illustrators at the $12 level, the big thing I am focusing my time on is to facilitate learning through working on comic book short stories.

Gaining experience is essential. Working on a comic forces you out of your illustration comfort zone. If it's in a script, you have to figure it out. Whether the script calls for buildings, crowds, motorcycles, or spiral galaxies, page after page, panel after panel, you will be faced with challenges you will have to solve. In addition to drawing challenges, there will be story-telling challenges, and composition challenges to unlock. As you solve these challenges--and don't worry; there will be plenty of help-- you will accumulate knowledge and experience that can be gained no other way.

I've been a professional illustrator for over 20 years. When I was in high school, I made comics with a buddy of mine, Troy McDevitt.  Looking back, we thought we were just having fun, but it proved to be the training ground for our careers. In no small part due to the comics we made, we both became professional artists.

If you want to try it out, or just support the effort, here's how:

Support Level: $1
I appreciate you pitching in! At this level, I'll post updates as to  how the project is coming and share finished art ahead of any publication. I'll also post a steady feed of my military logo art that I do for military units around the world.

Process Junkie Level: $5
At this level you get to see how the sausage gets made. Since this project has a group of creators collaborating from around the world, this is bound to be interesting. You'll get to see step-by-step how the pages are coming together.

Participation Level: $12
At this level, we're making comics together. In addition to GoToMeeting "open studio" sessions, you'll get access to the online forum which includes:

1. Form Boot Camp. This is a series of six exercises with video instruction that teaches the lessons I feel nearly every art teacher and art book takes for granted. Most instructors think that a feel for form is intuitive, but for many, maybe even most people, it is not. Don't fret. It's learnable, and I can teach you. You post your exercises in the threads for feedback.

2. Vocabulary building. Once you understand the building blocks of drawing, I'll lead you through exercises designed to build on that knowledge so that you can deconstruct everything you see, into simple forms, and more importantly, construct on paper what you see, and even that which exists in your imagination!

3. Threads on figure drawing, advanced perspective, caricature, and more.

4. My videos lessons. In addition to the Form Boot Camp videos, I have created video lectures on

a.) Head construction
b.) Hand construction
c.) Foot construction
d.) Eye construction
e.) Mouth construction
f.) Gesture drawing approaches
g.) Estimating perspective grids
h.) The history of the constructive approach to drawing
i.) How to make an expression thesaurus
J.) Developing an image in drafts
k.) Design principles in storytelling (3 parts--includes both character design and comic book page design)
l.) drawing hair
m.)...and more

5. My Photoshop templates, for laying out a page, and an entire comic

6. My illustrator templates for lettering

BONUS: This forum is shared with Troy McDevitt's Patreon and includes his videos on learning to sculpt as well!

We will be producing eight-page short stories of the Space Corps universe that will not be published on the website. Those who support us with even $1 will get access to these stories as we get them done.
