About Patrice Peck

Hello everyone,

Patrice, here, an independent journalist passionate about covering underreported stories about and for Black communities and empowering Black readers with informative, engaging, and accessible multimedia content. I’ve reported on almost every beat, from world news to beauty to TV and film, with the common denominator always being Black culture and identity.

Throughout my career, friends and readers have asked me how they can best support my work, to which I would encourage them to share my stories on social media. And now in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic and the uprisings against police brutality and systemic racism, even more people have expressed a desire to support my newsletter Coronavirus News for Black Folks and http://patricepeck.com/writing as a whole.

At first, I shied away from accepting funds. The newsletter has been a one-woman-show that demands time, effort, and care, considering the critical role information plays in combating this mysterious new disease, and so I deprioritized figuring out the best way to receive funds. Venmo? Cashapp? Paid newsletter subscriptions? Would I scare people off? It all intimidated me, triggering avoidance and anxiety. However, in the past couple of weeks, I realized that I’ve been dodging same the advice I always dole out to my fellow Black journalist: Your work is valuable and should be compensated as such.

And thus, here we are, on my Patreon page. Normally, I would have agonized over the launching of something like this, nitpicking and revising and reiterating for days on end. But in these times, "we need to be fast, and we need to be scrappy." Those are Patreon’s words, not mine. But you know what, they’re damn right.

So please consider becoming a member of my Patreon community and lending your support to this independent Black woman-led media initiative. You’ll be helping me build a more sustainable income source, giving me the stability and freedom to grow a readership and produce my best work.

Thank you for rocking with me!

Cheers,
Patrice
