In a nutshell:

Over at my blog, I write posts on a wide range of topics in hopes of sparking interesting brainthoughts in my readers. Your support will help me do this more and better!

What's all this about, then?

I've been blogging for over ten years, covering topics ranging from US politics, internet culture, and relationship advice to ink and paper, humanism, and Magic: the Gathering card design. Definitely an eclectic mix, but I like to think that by sharing these oddball facets of myself, I can inspire interesting new thoughts in readers like you. As far as I'm concerned, the stories I can best tell are my own, so I try to ground my writing in my own experiences and branch out from there.

Writing blog posts is a labor of love for me, and has been since I first started goofily sharing my 13-year-old life on the internet. However, these days, money and the motivation to push "publish" are both tight. By becoming a patron, not only will you help support an independent content creator on the internet (that's me!), you'll also help me keep the lights on over at my blog so that I can keep writing cool things.

Just who are you?

I'm Spencer, a mental health counselor associate, board game geek, and occasional Guy Who Writes Things Online. In the past, I've embarked on a number of fun creative projects, such as a video series about Japanese soft drinks, a sex and relationship advice column, a month-long blogging challenge, and a series about ink and paper in my life. On the employment side, I worked in both marketing and educational technology before settling on my current counseling career.

I've been writing as long as I can remember; I was one of two or three fifth-graders from my little elementary school to attend the Oregon Writing Festival, and before that, I was eagerly handing my own stories to teachers, begging them to read them aloud during storytime. These days, with a little more practice under my belt, I prefer to write posts and essays that present thought-provoking ideas through an honest, personal lens. I'm always learning and always practicing, and my blog is where much of that happens.

How often do you post?

Well, I used to aim for at least two posts a month, but that's... changed. As I wrote in early 2017, a number of stressors have jammed my creative feed, and I struggle to get damn near anything written. With your support, I can rebuild my confidence in writing and get back to monthly or twice-monthly posting.

What will you do with the money?

It's a little difficult to say what precisely I'll do with the money contributed via Patreon, since money's a fungible commodity and all, but my goals are, roughly in order:
  • Cover the costs of running Brainthoughts (hosting, domain names, etc.)
  • Possibly fund further development of the blog
  • Pay for my living expenses, like rent, bills, student loans, and groceries
I reserve the right to keep my financial information private, however, and I encourage you to think of your contribution as a payment for work you appreciate, not a donation that allows you to scrutinize my financial life.

How do these rewards work?

I have some neat rewards for anyone who contributes. Tiers build on one another, so if you contribute at a certain level, you get that level's reward as well as all the rewards from tiers below.

Why should I support you?

I mean, there are some cool rewards for doing so, but ultimately, you should support me because you like what I do and you want me to continue. That's what it boils down to.

Every single dollar helps. Thank you for making this possible. ❤️

Having 3 patrons will help me feel a lot more optimistic about my writing. I'll record a thank-you video and thank my first three patrons by name! I'll also chat for a few minutes about whatever subjects those first three patrons want to hear my thoughts on.
