Sport in Fiction is a project where I’m providing analysis of how sporting activities & games are portrayed in various works of fiction. Most of the work will be through articles on the website but I might create videos that accompany those articles or are standalone things.

Who is behind Sport in Fiction?
My name is Tom and I’ve had a love of sports since childhood. I regularly browse the sports section in newspapers, I played soccer in recreational youth leagues, and I even traveled to Japan for a baseball stadium tour!

I’ve also been a fan of anime and manga for many years and maintained a related blog (Nigorimasen!) for over a decade. At some point, I developed a deep interest in sports anime/manga and sports fiction in general. I presented panels about sports manga at a couple of anime conventions (Fanime 2012, Otakon 2012 & Fanime 2014) and then decided to create Sport in Fiction to further explore the intersection of sports and storytelling.

Why did I create a Patreon?
I started writing on Sport in Fiction about sports anime and manga but I wanted to expand its focus to cover movies, TV shows, books, games, and more. I also wanted to provide a way for readers to suggest topics for posts or commission projects.

I’ll use pledges to supplement the costs of obtaining materials - books, movies, TV shows, games, etc.

What will I be discussing on Sport in Fiction?

  • Fiction where sports is part of the main plot.
  • Fiction where sports is noticeable in the background or periphery (e.g., single episodes of a TV show, athlete characters in non-sports fiction, world-building in a game).
  • Career modes in sports games with storytelling elements.
