The Unofficial Hand Lettering Society of Silver Spring, MD started out as a group of community members who were entranced with the new trend of hand lettering. We met around our little town hand lettering in cafes together and invited more people to join us.

Since January 2015, our little gatherings have evolved to meetings of over 25 folks at a makerspace in Silver Spring. We are two years in and we have lots of crafty dreams for this Society.

Why is SSLetters important and worth supporting?
  • We connect, encourage + promote local artists
  • We create a safe judgement-free space for people to explore their creativity
  • We support other creative businesses like Catylator Makerspace that make our Silver Spring community unique
  • We inspire and support members who already are or are becoming creative entrepreneurs
  • We create and engage in community art projects to spread love and creativity through the art of hand lettering

Where does the money go?

Your donations help make this project sustainable for us on the material side, but there is no overhead going to paying ourselves to run the club. We contribute our time for free to make this happen because we believe this kind of creative community is crucial for Silver Spring to thrive.
First, there are the costs of the projects we already have in motion:
  • the supplies & labor we paid for to make the bags & pins to use as fundraising rewards
  • the paper we use for flyers and cards to spread the word
  • the even MORE paper for our zine project to show off how talented our letterers are!
Secondly, there is our goal to make room in the budget for new endeavors:
  • for more paper and new supplies we can bring to meetings for people to enjoy
  • new books about hand lettering to have at meetings for people to use as reference
  • supplies for our community projects including murals, zines, and postcarding campaigns to our local, state and national representatives

Just remember, the more awesome we can make this club, the more sway we have to pursue awesome collaborations that benefit our letterers.

What do I get out of it?
  • an unofficial membership card for the Unofficial Hand Lettering Society of Silver Spring
  • a free copy of our first SSLetters zine
  • discounts on select workshops at Catylator Makerspace (think laser cutting, screen printing and more!)
  • for a $2/month donation you get a society PIN to show off your membership!
  • for a $6/month donation you get the a society PIN and a society TOTE BAG
  • a personalized thank you card from our founders
  • endless gratitude and goodwill from our founders
