About Stella Untalan

Hello there!
I'm an artist born in Guam, educated in NYC, settled in Philadelphia. My studio practice is in an old factory building in the still gritty Hawthorne neighborhood of South Philadelphia.

I'm looking forward to sharing my process, projects, and studio life with you. I'll be including content here that you won't see elsewhere on the ever commercial internet. Here you can experience the investigation and day to day studio life that makes the work I do.

Your participation will inspire me on the days when I’m worn out with the everyday effort of art making. It will remind me about the interest that you have in following my work and my annual year-long project, You'll be providing me with resources that I will need both to make my work and to be sure it has exposure in exhibitions. Together we’ll be able to share the joy that others experience in being introduced to art and art making.

my work
My work is driven by process and materials, it is methodical, repetitious, and meditative. My drawings at their core focus on measurement and probing.

Most often I create marks made by filling a tool then using it until the liquid is gone or diminished. The repetition allows me to be caught up in a rhythm; the proximity of the marks create rest and action. I touch the surface, make the mark, and then gently move onto the next mark. In this work the process defines the outcome. It is minimalist, repetitive, and iterative. As I step away a topology of process is revealed. My drawings are made on many substrates both organic and synthetic. They are both analog and digital.

studio practice
Over the past decade I have stepped back from my design firm and concentrated more and more on my art practice. I've been in my current studio for more than a decade. I operated a small gallery for 5 years where I gave artists solo and group opportunities, and as my experience has grown so has my interest in larger works and curated collaborative projects.

past life
I studied drawing and printmaking at the Art Students League and School of Visual Arts and communication design at Parsons in New York City. I was a design professional for more than 30 years. The disciplined and intuitive aspects of being a designer and artist, the work and the play, the seeing and the telling, are totally integrated expressions.
