Who am I?
Hi there! My name is Stu Mentha and I'm a playwright, author, and all-round comedian. I write and produce plays, short stories, flash fiction, flash scripts, and poetry. I'm currently also working on a novel and shortly I intend to start pumping out some comedy videos on YouTube (all I can tell you is it will involve a lot of hats and a fake moustache). I write, illustrate, and maintain everything on StuMentha.com

So what's Patreon? Here's how it works:
If you're a fan of mine and want to support me in the creation of new art you can pledge to support me monthly. In return for your pledge you will be able to see sneak-peaks of new work and updates on what I'm up to before anyone else. Yes, even before readers of my blog. I endeavour to connect with you however I can by reading and replying to your comments, discussing past, present, and future projects, and by generally letting you in behind the scenes of my process and my journey. You get an exclusive pass! I love feedback and I love creating art for others and Patreon provides me with a platform to share my passion with smart, kind, supportive, future-platform embracing people.

I'm all about anchoring the things I do, whether creative projects or otherwise, in simplicity. I'm against the modern trend of more, more, more. So I keep my rewards simple too: $1 and $5 pledges. You can pledge more if you want to, but you don't have to. Even if you're a dollar-a-month backer, you will be able to participate in the conversation and influence my artistic path, hence making it OUR artistic path (via comments here, and on Twitter and Facebook). Every patron who supports me is important.
THANK YOU.

Why I need your support:
The more support I have, the more stories I can share with you and the world. I believe my writing is unique and in this day and age when the world is looking a bit messed up, to say the least, I think we need art to shine a light on ourselves, to laugh, and to learn. I'd like to get more of my work out there into the big bad world and I hope to do that by eventually writing more plays, restaging the plays I've already written, publishing books of my poetry and comedy flash fiction, creating YouTube comedy videos, and maybe even a podcast. The sky is the limit and I have a TONNE of ideas. I love making art, but to continue sharing my passion in all its many shades I need support.

Many of the great writers and artists of old were helped by patrons. Indeed, without patrons the world perhaps wouldn't now have the poetry of Keats, or the plays of Shakespeare, or the art of Rembrandt. I really believe that crowd-power is the future of patronage. If you're new to all this, welcome. Patreon is all about a network of artists connecting directly with their fans. So let's CONNECT! :D

Your pledge is more of an ongoing commitment to me and my art than a donation. With your support I can write and illustrate more stories and hit the PUBLISH button more often. I want to avoid using external ads on my website and, being a minimalist, I want to steer clear of gimmicky merchandise. Isn't the world cluttered enough already? Your support will make it possible for me to create art with higher production values, and more of it too, so that I may share more top-quality stories with you and the world.

* The great thing is you get to road test all of this (you can pull out before you're charged at the end of any month, so it's basically risk-free).

Backstory (you may not have asked for it, but I'm gonna give it to you anyway):

I grew up in an art gallery. Literally. My mother turned the back of our home into a working business. She had art in her veins too. My grandfather was a successful visual artist and I remember him toiling away in his studio all day and sometimes all night. He was Dutch, trained in the old masters style in Holland, and he made it into some of the great Australian landscape anthologies. He also liked to tell stories, usually silly, you-never-knew-if-he-were-serious stories, about how he escaped a pack of Nazis in the war by hiding in a sewer shaft, or how he once painted a whole lighthouse hanging from a single rope. Sometimes, when it was only me and him in a room, he would ask me questions like, "How do you make a cat balloon?" And I would reply, "I don't know, how?" I was say, ten years old. And he would mime lifting a cat's tail up and blowing hard and then act out the cat floating away into the sky. These kinds of jokes would usually cause my grandmother to yell, "Wim! Stop telling silly stories to the kid!" from an adjacent room, but it was always too late. I was always already in stitches. Looking back, I think that's where I got my depraved sense of humour from. And my fascination with cats come to think of it. :)

In many ways, I was probably destined to become a visual artist. I still draw, and sometimes even paint. But theatre, to me, has always been and will always be another step forward. Theatre and indeed even film to me, truly is moving art. When I write scripts, whether for stage or screen, I feel that same jolt of happiness I felt seeing my grandfather mime making cat balloons. Stories have the power to change the world. They really do. And comedy, specifically, is the tool I use not just to make people laugh but to make people think about society, existence, philosophy, and how we can all just get along. The idea of transforming the crazy ideas that spew up from the dark inner recesses of my brain from something invisible into something tangible on stage ... Well, that's what I was made for. That's what makes me feel like I am once again a young boy watching invisible cat balloons float away into the sky. And I want you to have that feeling too.

My aim is to make my website StuMentha.com a hub for my creative pursuits, always with one chief intention: to get my stories out into the world.

Jump on board and let's be friends! :D
