Stump the Monk is a video podcast that examines what it means to practice spirituality in the midst of our complex lives. What skills can we develop to meet our lives and heal in the middle of suffering? Regardless of our spirituality (or lack of it) we all must create a life that brings us ease, joy, connection, and healing. We meet the oppressions, the sufferings, the difficulties and find some way to make sense of it all. Each episode will have a bit of questions and responses. We invite viewers to participate in this conversation. Then we will sit down and join in conversation with a variety of people to discuss how they are living in their lives, with various spiritualities, with no spiritualities, with hidden spiritualities. Together we explore topics on a variety of important questions of today.

About the Talent:

Host - Rev. Daigan Gaither began Buddhist practice in 1995 in the Vipassana (Insight) tradition, and then began to study Zen in 2003 with Ryushin Paul Haller Roshi. He received Lay Ordination in 2006 where he was given the name Daigan or “Great Vow”, and received Priest Ordination in July 2011. His Buddhist practice and ministry developed alongside his ministry as a Sister of Perpetual Indulgence (becoming fully professed in 1995). Daigan speaks internationally on a variety of topics particularly around gender, sexuality, social justice and their intersections with the Dharma. He also has sat on a number of boards and committees that serve community needs and further social justice causes.

Daigan has a BA in Philosophy and Religion from San Francisco State University, and an MA in Buddhist Studies (with a chaplaincy certificate and a certificate in Soto Zen Buddhism) from the Graduate Theological Union and the Institute of Buddhist Studies. He identifies as a disabled, queer, white, cis male and uses he/him pronouns.

Producer/Director - Fred Gebhardt has a background in filmmaking and videography, usually focusing on thee stories of the queer culture in the San Francisco Bay Area. Through documentaries, music videos, and short films, he has found his passion. Although not particularly spiritual himself, he has seen firsthand how the creative and artistic processes can in fact be spiritual practices all their own. With mindfulness being at the forefront of the video content he produces, he figured this project would be a perfect chance to combine his passions into one outlet.
