Part of my interest in Patreon has always been experimental: Can small donations really add up to sustainable independent journalism, and can both reporters and readers feel like they're getting a fair deal outside of a traditional institutional relationship?
I'm a John S. Knight Fellow at Stanford where I'm researching labor shifts, employment classification trends, and cooperative models that could improve work for freelancers in media and other industries. I'm still reporting and drawing, but not much, if at all, for media clients. For the next year, I'm investing more of my time and resources into this Patreon experiment, in the interest of sharing my research throughout the year and hopefully building something that will live beyond my fellowship term.
Your pledge will help me produce a weekly illustrated newsletter and a monthly ~animation~ featuring updates from my labor research and reporting. I'll use these funds to buy any necessary technical equipment and pay for research and motion graphics assistance. These pieces aren't exclusive to Patreon subscribers, but you get first access plus some subscribers-only bonus updates and sketches. Your support is appreciated, as are your questions and comments -- please don't hesitate to reach out here or by email.
