Stan Stewart I'm very curious about what microphone(s) you use to record clarinet. I've had varying success with recording reed instruments. Of course, if it's a trade secret, that's understandable, too!

Thomas J. West For the last two clarinet recordings, I've used an MXL 990 condenser mic with an Alesis USB mixer. I found out from recording previously to this that "close micing" the clarinet doesn't work well because the mic tends to pick up the finger holes closer to the mic more strongly. So, I turn the gain up a bit and keep the mic about 2 feet from the instrument. My biggest issue right now is needing better hardware to get a cleaner recording. I still have a noticeable amount of background hiss or hum, which according to a music producer friend of mine is due to the economy-grade electronics in the USB mixer. The bass singer in my a cappella group owns all his own gear, and he records using a PreSonus FireBox and gets great results. I have to investigate and get a better interface for my PC.

Stan Stewart I completely agree regarding the Alesis USB: it will never get you a top-notch, clean sound. I'm glad to "hear" that the MXL does this well on clarinet!

Thomas J. West Chatting with music producer friends of mine about this on Facebook as we speak. I think the answer to my woes may be the 2i2. http://us.focusrite.com/usb-audio-interfaces/scarlett-2i2
