About Suzan M. Butler

I'm Suzan, and I write under the name S.M. Butler. I also like cookies. Would you like one? They’re really good. I'm a New York Times and USAToday bestselling author who writes military romance and romantic suspense and now fantasy. I'm also a visual artist and recently, I've gotten into Youtube on a semi-regular basis.

I'm a writer before anything else, but people are rarely just one thing. I'm an artist, an AuthorTuber, a mother, and a small business owner. Yeah, I'm busy. But I like busy.

Here’s the problem...

Busy is different than overwhelmed.

I need more time. I have a full-time job that is both exhausting and stressful at times, and a writing business. Like any business, the writing business is also time-intensive. Between travel to conventions, meetings, and marketing said business, it can take up to 40-50 hours a week. The full-time job is 46 hours a week.

I don’t actually mind my full-time gig. But I’m getting tired. I can’t work 9 hours a day and then come home and work another 8 hours as a sustainable pace. I can’t count the number of times I’ve fallen asleep at my desk at home while editing a video, or while writing a scene. I’ve sent accidental sleep tweets so often it’s become a running gag on Twitter.

I don’t take care of myself as much as I should. My mental and physical health has taken a serious toll this year. Something has to give. It’s time for me to dedicate myself to one job.

My current goal is financial stability. While I make enough from the full-time gig to get by, just "getting by" is stressful and anxiety-inducing. For my own mental sanity, I need to increase my income by at least $1000 a month. When I'm stressed or anxious, I have a hard time creating new work. No amount of coffee can fix burnout, which comes often at the pace I'm going, if I'm not careful. Publishing is a hard business. When you make cents on the dollar for a book, it takes tens of thousands of sales to make a real living from publishing books.

The current goal of this campaign is to make it to $1000 per month. I know that’s a big number, but I’m willing to throw content at you to make it happen. I’ve set up a number of stretch goals for added content along the way. The more this page earns, the more I can do for YOU. And truly, I love creating for you all because every one of you here with me on Patreon are ROCKSTARS. I am thankful for each and every one of you for your love and support.

Why Patreon?

Freelance income is inherently unstable. A check here, a check there. Here a check, there a check. Everywhere (and sometimes nowhere) a check-check. Health insurance for self-employed folks is outrageous. Not to mention… Will all my money arrive in time to pay rent at the beginning of the month? Who the hell knows.

All this is why I’ve kept my full-time job. I used to write 70-100k a month regularly. Now I’m lucky to hit 30k and that’s if I don’t have edits due. I used to read 5-10 books a month. Now I’m lucky if I can read 1-2.

Here’s the thing: The level of my anxiety and stress directly affects my creative flow. I’ve always said that I don’t believe in writer’s block. And I don’t. But creativity can’t function if you can’t stop thinking about how you’re going to make next month’s rent or how you’re going to pay that phone bill before they turn it off. And by you, obviously, I mean me. But it might be the same for you as well.

If all I do is work and sleep and stress out, well, that’s going to affect quality of my writing. I don’t want that to happen and I’m guessing you don’t either, if you’re still with me here.

How will Patreon help?

Like the patrons of the past, you literally make it possible for me to devote time and money to creating more fiction for you. For supporting me here, you have my overwhelming gratitude. But of course, you get stuff too. Because if you came to my house to visit, I'd feed you cookies and drinks and talk with you for as long as you wanted. I can't do that online, so I'll just give you fiction instead.

Every week, I post an installment on Bloodlines, my urban fantasy serial. I also do a weekly podcast for patrons, and regular content updates.

It's not a lot but my time is limited and proportional to how much I can raise on Patreon every month. Quite plainly, the more support I get from you, the more I can focus on more writing. That's what I truly want to do.

I’m willing to throw content at anyone who pledges to make that happen. I want to quit my full-time job to concentrate on this business. That extra 46 hours every week will make a big difference. I could do this if I had a way to earn a reliable $1000/month.

Don’t get me wrong. I need more than that to survive, but it’s a start and can allow me to move to a part-time position and dedicate more time to writing while still managing to pay monthly bills with minimal stress.

What do YOU get as a patron?

While we’re in the building phase of this Patreon page, you’ll get monthly content, like the serial posts, the podcast, and writing updates. The more we earn here, the more I’ll give back to you.

If you’ve made it this far…

You are awesome. No, really. So. Much. Awesome.

Also if you can't support me here, that's totally okay! I've been there, too. I'd love to connect with you in other ways. Please follow me over on Instagram or YouTube or help me boost the signal by referring a friend. No matter what, I'm happy to meet you!

$23 of $75 per month
WOW! So awesome!
You know what I'm going to do now? TWO EXTRA BLOODLINES POSTS PER MONTH. So that's a total of 6-7 serial posts a month, depending on if there are 4 or 5 Thursdays in a month.

Reaching $75 a month means a lot to me. It's our first goal! For now, I'll continue to reinvest this $75 each month (or at least what I get after Patreon takes their cut) back into paying for artwork, covers and editing for the Bloodlines series in the near future.
