Swordsfall is creating an Afropunk Sci-Fantasy setting for a TTRPG and Novels

Swordsfall is a setting born from a mixture of love and frustration with fantasy lore. The focus point of a lot of the Low or High Fantasy that we have come accustomed to all has a distinct Eurocentric flavor to it. It's been something that a lot of us have grown up with and enjoyed over the years.

The side effect of this, however, has been a lack of representation in fantasy not just for people of color, but for whole ethnic groups and cultures. I yearned to see more fantasy books and other nerdy properties that had the same wonder of swords and magic but with characters that weren't all named Richard. (Not that there's anything wrong with Richard, but variety is the spice of life.)

So in the same way that works such as Lord of the Rings and Dungeons and Dragons is Eurocentric, Swordsfall is Afrocentric. The underlining lore is built from the history of pre-colonial Africa.

Not just one part. All. Of. Africa.

There's a wealth of information, and lore from the African Diaspora that's just been begging to be utilized. Swordsfall will pull from that barely touched pot.

Swordsfall has several components to the project; World Anvil, novels, a Tabletop RPG and informational YouTube videos about the research I've uncovered.

The biggest and most vital piece to this project is a website by the name of World Anvil. This amazing site is a hosting platform for storytellers and RPG groups of all kind. On the website I've been able to craft and display backstory to Tikor, the world Swordsfall takes place on.

It's here that you can get a peek into the world as a whole; the continents, cultures, gods, magic, animals, and lore. It is, in essence, the world bible to the planet of Tikor. I update the World Anvil on a weekly and sometimes daily basis. Currently, there are over 100 pages of detailed lore on the website with more coming every day.

Consider it sort of the Swordsfall Wiki.

The story of the world of Tikor is one with endless tales to weave. While the World Anvil is expansive, with some articles coming in at over 3000 words (I promise they're good reads), some stories are so big they deserve the proper written treatment. For these fantastic tales, only a proper novel will do.

The first novels from the Swordsfall universe are the End of the Era trilogy, the story of how the Divine Age of the world came to an end in death and mass destruction.

The first book in the trilogy is currently in production! I officially started it during NaNoWriMo 2018 and was able to make some serious progress, hitting the 50k goal with a day to spare.

There are more novels I have planned from the world, each of them exploring different parts of the world and the eternal struggle of humans. It's through the novels that you'll learn about some of the true heroes and villains of Tikor. They will always continue exclusive content that can't be spoiled by the World Anvil.

Swordsfall actually started as a simple tabletop campaign I dreamed up one day, bored and itching to be creative. Somewhere during the build-out, I realized I wanted more than a simple throwaway campaign. I wanted it to be its own game with an expansive story and lore that the players would want to be immersed in, to just homebrew every session.

The beauty of World Anvil is that you can actually PLAY A SESSION FROM THE WEBSITE! That's right, you can play Swordsfall: The Tabletop RPG from your computer, from the Swordsfall World Anvil. Playing the game from the wiki!

Technology is fun, right?

That means I can make custom scenarios for the RPG using content you've already read on the World Anvil. So while playing with your group, you can refer to The Karu article to check if they'd be okay with a little forest fire action (the answer is, they are definitely not), or what the special properties were for your chosen profession, or the name of that one god in the Pangool Pantheon?

This part of the project happened quite by accident. As I began to tell my friends, co-workers and other worldbuilders about some of the amazing lore and tales I found while researching, I was shocked. Not only had none of them heard ANY of the things I told them, but they were also eager to hear more about it.

Cultures where King meant ruler, period. Which meant that you had proud and powerful female Kings and not just watered down female versions. Daytime lovin' vampires capable of possessing humans, causing light to pore from the orifices of the victim. There are so many wild, fascinating tales and origins that were being overlooked.

So starting sometime in early 2019, on a periodic basis, I'm going to start releasing short Youtube videos detailing some of the information I've found in my research. WITH citations (for all you data nerds, I got you).

After reading the above spam and mini Ted talk, you can see that there's quite a bit of content here. Now add in that it's only done by one man (Hi, I'm Brandon), who also works a full-time job and well, the schedule gets pretty packed.

With your help (and generous money), I can begin to take extra days off to devote to just writing. I'll be able to invest in a real artist to make my logo and graphics. Hire some of the amazing artists you see displayed on the World Anvil to do custom pieces of art. Also, as you'll see, I'm big on crediting the artist. (if I have it wrong or missing and you're the artist, let me know! We'll fix that!)

The eventual goal is to write Swordsfall full time. I want to be part of the wave to bring more diversity to the nerd realm. Especially one in a form that I feel like anyone can fall in love with, no matter your background, creed or sexuality. The imagination is meant to be shared with all, and I want to embody that.

To reward you for throwing your money at the screen, we have Patreon Rewards!
