My name is Talun Zeitoun and I run an eponymous, digital storytelling blog. I have a passion for storytelling and, while I consider myself a writer, I also consider myself a visual artist. As a result, I strive to combine carefully thought-out visuals with my writing and present it digitally in a way that’s table food-for-thought, table conversation, and eye candy (pardon the clichés).

Why I write in a “no one reads anymore” world. I happen to pen a concept better than I can speak it, hence why I’ve always struggled with speaking to a camera. I write out of my strive to be more vulnerable with myself — not only for self-improvement — but because I firmly believe that vulnerability helps us authentically connect with each other. I’m not afraid to be wrong, I’m not afraid to admit fault, and I’m not afraid to not have a solution. If anything, I want to shine light on what I’m experiencing and what I’ve learned, and share that with you in a beautiful way. I hope what I write about sparks conversation with me, or your friends, or people in your community, or simply with yourself because I believe that doing so helps us stay curious and forever evolve.

I create because I’m curious. I write about what affects me via conversation with other millennials on a day-by-day basis. Topics stem from:
  • dating in the gay community,
  • the importance of eradicating the mental health stigma,
  • our relationship with technology and the impact that it has on how we function,
  • money,
  • and more.
As a result, I visually capture these concepts with an expressive, fashion eye in the form of photography or video. It’s essentially editorial driven first by prose. I also love writing poetry because it’s the best projector of my mind in the present moment.

My blog will always be free. First things first: access to the content on my blog is free. I won’t gate it asking you to subscribe or charge monthly for access. At the core of why I write, I want the finished product to be accessible to anyone and everyone so that we can all engage in conversation about the topic at-hand.

Then again, my blog isn’t free (for me). Running a website business has its fees. Directly, these include all the techy costs such as domain registration, hosting, privacy, security, and CDN (i.e. content delivery network that essentially keeps my site speedy). I also needs funds to pay my developer for emergencies like when my site goes down or in the event of a hack. The website was custom designed (by me) and built by my developer and, as a result, I’m constantly finding ways to add functionality and improve user experience.

I would love to be ad-free and consciously work with great brands that align. The most unfulfilling work anyone can do is to do something they know deep down inside, they don’t want to do it, and that includes working with partners you don’t want to work with. In the past, I’ve done this for the sake of a paycheck (rent was due!) and I’d like to limit this to essentially zero go-forward as to keep my content on track with my mission. Since we are consumers, to eradicate brand integration from our lives isn’t realistic realistic; however, I believe in conscious brand integration, by promoting brands that do have a good product or service, those that can truly help my immediate audience, and/or embody a story that beautifully aligns with the one I’m trying to tell.

Creating digital stories is a process that takes time… and a lot of it! My process begins with a concept that gets written into a first draft (one I share with my Patreon ‘Inner Circle’ members). From there, I draw inspiration from what I’ve written to put together a mood board based on the story’s symbolism. I cull together inspiration from a variety of sources, map out the styling, and location scout. From there, I get my creative partners in place to shoot. Afterwards, the post-production process kicks in with editing and layout into a final draft. Finally, after rigorous proofreading, the story goes live and is shared with the world. As you can see, this takes a lot of time, and considering I create from one of the most expensive cities in the world to live in — New York City — I can be more “in the zone” and committed if this time is compensated for.

Content production requires a budget. Am I working with Leibovitz? No. Am I booking a castle and flying across the world to shoot in it? No (well, at least not yet). I like to work within my environment relative to wherever I am at a given point, which means using local photographers and either using good ol’ New York City as my backdrop or renting space for a few hours, all of which requires a budget. I don’t believe that anyone should work for free, which is why I’ve always paid my photographers (an Instagram credit doesn’t pay rent!). My intention is to keep doing so. That said…

I want to monetarily support artists. For whatever reason, artists tend to get the short end of the stick, especially when their resources are needed more than ever to launch the slew of ventures we see pop up daily. Photography, videography, graphic design, and even web development (which I consider an art), are fields that don’t get paid enough for the impact they have on a business. This is, of course, due to a highly saturated market and technology being able to take their place, but the artists I work with have studied their craft and are on a path to become the best artist they can be. I want to support their journey and help eradicate artist poverty by collaborating in a respectful manner.

… and here we are with Patreon. If you’re on board and want to be on this journey with me, I’ll be forever grateful. I intend to use my Patreon platform as a multi-way conversation between you, me, and other Patreon members to keep our curiosities alive and connected in a beautiful, meaningful way. Hope to see you part of the family.
