Tangoristo is creating a Japanese reading app for language learners

Hi, my name is Javier Artiles and I'm the creator of Tangoristo, a mobile app for Apple and Android devices which helps language students read real Japanese texts.

Why do I build/maintain Tangoristo?

As I progressed in my Japanese studies as I was confronted, as many students do, with the difficulty of reading text which contains a great amount of kanji (Chinese characters adopted in the Japanese writing system).
I wanted a simple and effective tool to empower me to read actual Japanese texts, something that I could adapt to my current reading level and change as my reading skill improved.

Why support the app?

Three main reasons:
  1. Every month I pay server costs to keep the service running for everybody. The texts that you see in the app are pre-processed and updated by computers other than your mobile device. This allows the app to access lots of articles with very detailed language analysis, without being constrained by the limitations that running everything on the device itself would impose. Every month I have to pay for the cost of running the Tangoristo analysis services on these computers.
  2. Your support tells me this app is still useful and that I should continue improving it. Your are willingness to help me pay for the cost of running this app gives me a strong signal that the app is still relevant, and that it makes sense for me to continue maintaining and improving it.
  3. It helps me keep the app ad-free. For a while Tangoristo has been supported by ads and one-time in-app purchases to remove those ads. I've never felt quite comfortable with the ad driven monetization model. I don't like ads, I don't like to show you ads, and yet somehow I need to pay the bills at the end of the month. When I saw Patreon I realized that there is a way to achieve the goal of paying the bills, while getting rid of ads altogether. This takes me to the next point...
Why Patreon?

As I mentioned above, I want Tangoristo to be an ad-free app. At the same time I can't maintain the service without your help paying the monthly bills.
Patreon seems like a great opportunity to remove ads from the app, get the help I need to maintain the service, and be extremely transparent to the Tangoristo users about how I'm trying to achieve this.
Goals
$12 of $300 per month
This is the current monthly costs of services used by Tangoristo and provided by AWS. I'm working to reduce these costs in the coming months, which I will reflect in the goal earnings here once I achieve it.
