About tante

Ahoy comrade.

I've been typing into the Internet for quite a while now. Sometimes for old-school media publications such as VICE or WIRED and some bigger German ones like SpiegelOnline, DieZeit and others. But I have also been writing a lot on my own site.

Writing on one's own page has the distinct advantage of not having to fit into certain boxes: "Not longer than 8000 characters", "No swearing", "Don't assume people know that the Internet exists", "No, you can't be called 'tante', that's not a name". My page, my rules, my topics.

But writing doesn't go faster just because it's for one's own publication/media empire. Actually, it often takes longer (because I tend to tackle more complex topics on my own site compared to what other publications pay me for).

I have a day job aside from writing (which is why I sometimes publish few articles for quite a while), so writing is just a part of my income. I do write for bigger publishers and they do pay for my work but more often than not they come to me with a specific question or topic. But I'd like to be able to focus more on the issues I actually want to work on instead of writing articles that fit into more mainstream publications.

And that's where you come in. Raising some money through Patreon would allow me to take the time I set aside for writing/consulting to write more in depth about many of the hard problems that the digital turn brought with it: The naive belief in the existence of "AI" and how it creates toxic social dynamics. What "real life" means in a time where digital and analogue parts of life are deeply intertwined. What automation does to, with and for us. What the term "augmentation" means ... I have a lot of ideas and - right now - too little time.

Since my schedule is not as flexible as others and I can't always write as much as I want this Patreon would only charge per English text (and only if they are of some significant length and depth as in more than a quick blog). I might not write anything a month or an article a week depending on other commitments or just how long it takes to actually get an idea down to "paper" properly. But my plan is to aim for 2 to 3 essays a month.

So if you liked my writing and would like me to be able to write more any support would be appreciated immensely.

I know that usually there are tiers of supporters that get different kinds of stuff. I'm not a fan of that, not everybody can give as much as others. I see this more as a collaborative thing: You don't get anything individually but if we reach certain milestones everybody gets something. I have been thinking about setting up goals for every article getting recorded as a podcast but I'm very much open for suggestions.

If I write two posts a month and get 20 bucks it basically pays for the server costs. So I'd be out of the red :)
