About Teju Abiola

Hey hey hey! I'm Teju, and I'm a painter + illustrator. I work a 9-5 as an inhouse illustrator, but focus my personal work on painting and portraiture. I'm practiced in a variety of media, but have a particular connection to watercolor and gouache.

So...what are we doing here?

I'm about to delve deep into a study of artistic anatomy. I decided to do this after seeing some truly inspiring work. It devastated me. I was so inspired to create!—but the harsh truth is because my technical drawing and anatomy skills are lacking, I cannot execute what I envision. I also looked back at my figure drawings and paintings from college circa 2017, and they are still very good. I remembered how much growth I had in college. It was a wake-up call!

While painting skills have increased tenfold, my drawing skills have regressed, because I've kept at the former, and have been complacent with the other. Suddenly, it became violently unacceptable to me. Was I going to just accept this as truth and never improve or reach the level I want to reach, just cuz it's hard?

I have taken several figure drawing and painting classes as well as an anatomy class in my education and can draw a pretty good figure from life. But there is a concerning disconnect in applying it to my creative work. Art is hard, but the chasm between my drawing and painting abilities does not sit well with my spirit.

So I'm here to study, study, study! And share as I go along. To keep myself accountable and to maybe help someone who struggles with the same things I do. Thanks for coming along!
