patronsAbout Tempo Timor
Quality investigative journalism is rare in East Timor. With millions in oil revenue now coming on tap, a strong, critical media is urgently needed. Tempo Timor aims to deliver that news service to the Timorese people. Donors will be providing a news service to a nation and in return receiving English language news updates and analysis available only to donor members.
Jose Belo is the country's most renowned investigative journalist. He was a thorn in the side of the Indonesians during the occupation. He has exposed multiple corruption scandals since independence. He has just broken the nation's first paedophilia scandal at a Catholic orphanage. And there is so much more to tell. Those kinds of stories win him fans but not many rich friends. Without help from international supporters the best of journalism will not survive.
For about $12,000 USD per year Belo can employ 2 other journalists to make Tempo Timor a powerhouse of investigative journalism in East Timor.
Your sponsorship will primarily fund the Tetum language news site, available for free for the East Timorese people. Summaries of all major investigations will be posted on the new English language site and supporters will receive an exclusive weekly digest of all news and political events in the country. www.tempotimor.com
