Hello, we're Terl.

We make stuff that provides health, relief and well-being through the power of technology. We are a social enterprise that harnesses technology as a force for social good. Visit our website to find out more about our services.

A huge problem

One of the reasons why Terl was setup is because the purpose of helping people through technology is so often an afterthought for many companies. It's rarely the sole focus of a business' mission. Can we blame them though? With a huge number of startups failing within the first year, companies should not be demonised for thinking about socio-conscious projects till later on when they are profitable.

However this brings us onto a huge problem. As the values of being socially conscious have not been written into those companies' DNA from the start, it creates a huge incentive problem. The company, e.g the shareholders, wants the company to make money but being socio-conscious projects are all about making people's lives better rather than making money. So what's it to be? Make money or better people's lives?

Why Terl is different

Terl was setup to be socially conscious from the start. We're a social enterprise that puts people first. Being a social enterprise means that we do make money like a regular company but we give back to communities. In fact, our first few projects were open-source and made available to the tech community.

  1. Lazysodium: an open-source cryptography library that aims to be easy to use.
  2. Recordo: an open-source privacy centred diary and app to help people with catharsis.

Not all our projects are free. Recordo, although it is open-source, is also a paid-for subscription service so we can make some money that way.

"Hang on," you think to yourself, "If you're earning money through Recordo and other services, then why does Terl need Patreon?"

Well, read on.

Why we need Patreon and you

There's been many times an open-source project has been disbanded due to the parent company that hosted the project lacked the money to continue. We don't want that to happen with our projects. So we need Patreon to keep those projects funded independent of our other services so that even if we as a business fails, we will still have enough oomph from Patreon to keep us working on them.

We also need Patreon to keep us developing more free things. For example, Tholin, a cryptocoin app that enables low fee payments to help people in developing countries send recieve money from families abroad needs money to enable initial development.

And finally, the fact is, maintaining services ain't cheap. Sometimes we need to charge for our services to ensure that they stay alive.

Exclusive discounts and access

Hope that was enough to warrant you becoming a patron. We give some discount on our paid-for services such as Recordo if you do become a patron. Also, you receive priority support + feature requests on our open-source projects.

Open-source is hard. Hard to maintain. Hard to document. Hard to code. This goal will make it easier for us to manage our open-source projects.
