About

Tessera Arts Collective is an arts nonprofit that supports womxn (including queer, trans, femme and non-binary) abstract artists of color in the Greater Philadelphia area & nationwide by providing opportunities, resources, and programming that elevates their work and practice. Tessera propels these artists to take their rightful place in the art world by providing a refuge to incubate and nurture creativity.

Our programming and offerings to artists and the public include:

  • Gallery: We currently operate an art gallery & studio on Frankford Avenue located in the Kensington neighborhood of North Philadelphia.
  • Publications: Our publications are designed to center not just the work of abstract artists of color, but also their perspectives along with critical analysis of abstraction by arts administrators of color. Our flagship publication, Abstractions Magazine, is a digital & bi-annual print art publication offering in-depth profiles of womxn identifying & non-binary artists of color creating abstract work, and editorials on abstraction in modern art through a WOC centered perspective & feminist lens.
  • Free Art Bin: our bin of small, original abstract artworks made by Black & Brown womxn artists that are 100% free to the public. It's placed outside of our gallery during open hours and occasionally at various locations around the city-you know, guerrilla style!
  • Other programming: exhibitions, artist meetups, film screenings/watch parties, artist talks & salon style conversations, & gallery visits.
Contributions from our subscribers go directly toward funding our programming, publications, and projects, as well as offer direct financial support to the artists we work with.
