Joe Kwon's True Ghost Stories from Around the World began as a research experiment nearly twenty years ago.

Since then, it's grown into one of (maybe even THE) world's largest -- tens of thousands and still growing -- archive of edited true ghost encounters in the world! It's terrifying. It's surreal. It's mysterious. It belongs to supportive fans just like you.

From the Beginning
From its infancy we were interested not only in the frightening aspects of ghost encounters from around the world, but also what many of these encounters have in common. Are all ghosts semi-transparent? Do ghosts in Japan act any different than ghosts in North America? Do all ghosts float and hover, or do some stand and walk?

We began by asking people from all over the world to tell us in detail about their ghostly encounters, and they did. But, we didn't get the findings we were expecting. Frankly, we expected the physical characteristics and actions of ghosts to be as diverse as the imaginations and cultures they represented. After all, we weren't convinced from the beginning that ghosts were real. What we discovered quickly changed our minds and literally terrified us.

Laid to Rest
It very quickly became clear all those years ago that there were astounding similarities in ghost encounters across the globe. Ghosts could be categorized, and each classification of ghost is capable of things specific to its category. The more we analyzed the information we were gathering, the clearer it became that we were venturing deeper and deeper down a very real path that neither living nor dead were ever meant to return from.

Wanting to discontinue our research, Our first reaction was to remove the website links to our research page. We thought removing the links we'd posted would be enough to stop the inflow of ghost encounters that were coming in from all over the world. The domain name eventually expired and the only available access to the website reverted to a long complicated URL on a server full of other abandoned and neglected websites.

Ghostly Archive Indeed
But that research site, much like the ghosts it documented, found its way back to the land of the living all on its own. Perhaps otherworldly, or perhaps just through a series of strange luck and coincidences, unbeknownst to us people continued to stumble onto the research page. For several years the archive of encounters eerily grew in secret.

One day while searching for things to delete to free up space on the server, the database file received our attention. Just as we were about to delete it, we realized it had a recent timestamp. We opened the file to the incredible shock of finding that thousands of additional encounters had been added to it over the years.

It had long been decided our analysis on the subject would not continue -- it was opening a door that we'd never be able to close again and we were staring at the proof. But the encounters themselves were so fascinating -- and in many cases frightening --  that we finally conceded to continue, but in a hopefully safer direction.

Transitioning Back to the Living
That led to the next big challenge. The stories were written by people from all walks of life and all levels of education, not by seasoned authors. That was fine for it's original purpose, but most of the descriptions of the ghostly encounters were filled from beginning to end with mistakes in grammar, spelling, and punctuation. In other words, while they served adequately as research material, they weren't easy on the eyes for casual reading. It would require costly resources to edit such a large and growing number of encounters for wide dissemination.

A Single Heartbeat
Around that time, Apple was introducing the first "iPhone" and we recognized the opportunity. We edited a meager selection of the stories and published them into one of the very first mobile apps. Enough users purchased the app to make it worth editing more stories, and so the process continued. Users were even able to submit their own ghost encounters via the app, so the archive once again began to grow quickly. We reviewed and edited the best stories and published them, and that drew more people to purchase the app, and that allowed us to edit more stories and publish them for our readers.

Waiting in the Shadows
Over time, however, the market became saturated and sales dwindled. It would have worked out well if the sales had been subscription based, but Apple had not yet implemented a subscription into their mobile sales platform when Joe Kwon's True Ghost Stories from Around the World app was introduced. That meant we could only afford to provide editing and publication resources to existing users as long as we continued gaining enough new users each month. If we slacked on editing due to low sales, existing users became disappointed and retaliated with bad reviews which reduced new sales further, which in turn would lead to even fewer resources to appease existing users. On top of that, intensive resources were required to maintain the app to keep up with the ever-changing mobile operating system. The model was unsustainable, but the archive had proven its importance to fans worldwide.

Will the Haunting Continue?
If fans are willing to support the continued maintenance of this archive, we're passionately willing and eager to give them what they want. The archive may instead be laid to rest, but it doesn't seem to be willing to rest in peace.
