About The Bower, Brunswick Park

The Bower is a gallery, publication studio and cafe in Brunswick Park. It is a collaborative project between Louisa Bailey and Joyce Cronin and has charitable status as a Community Interest Company no. 10932813.

As a result of the coronavirus/Covid-19 health crisis we are in the difficult position of having to close for the foreseeable future. The income from the cafe is a key source of funding which supports our core costs, including rent and bills. The loss of this income will be greatly missed. If you would have bought a coffee or a book or a card from us during this time, please consider making a donation here, however small. It will be a big help until we can resume our programme and activities.

Our artistic programme responds to the context of these unique properties and the locality and is driven by our interest in sociopolitical and feminist practice. The cafe extends our engagement with our core principles of hospitality, collaboration, exchange and community.

The Bower is a voluntary organisation which does not receive any revenue funding. We both juggle other jobs and commitments while keeping The Bower going because we believe in the importance of non-commercial, alternative art spaces and the role that organisations such as ours play in working with artists and writers at all stages in their careers.

We organise exhibitions and events and produce books with artists and writers. In 2017 we ran a successful crowd funding campaign to transform the derelict toilet block in Brunswick Park, Camberwell for this purpose. In addition to the toilet block, we also took on the old park keepers hut, enabling us to provide a cafe facility for the park.

Patreon funds will help contribute to our monthly income, so that we can continue to build and develop the project.
