The Art House is Southampton's only independent, not-for-profit, community run arts centre, cafe, gallery and venue which has been running since 2008. For ten years, we have radically carved out a space in our city where people can discover their creativity and feel that they are treated with dignity, respect and a sense of purpose.

We are so much more than a cafe or venue, we are a new way of doing things, part of a global progressive movement towards a more grassroots, community-led world, a world where everyone has the chance to explore their creative potential in powerful ways. Social movements have always been lead by art, and art needs space to happen - space for people to gather, collaborate, learn and encourage one another.

The Art House is a community, a space where people can come together for company, to share values, to support each other as well as supporting creativity, endeavour, a space where you can be who you are, a space that is welcoming and enthusiastically embraces diversity.

Part of how our space is funded is through food and drink sales in our lovely vegetarian cafe. However, fundraising and patrons have always been a part of our picture, supporting us with one-off and regular amounts to keep running.  At the moment, we raise roughly £600 per month from regular patrons supporting us through recurring PayPal and BACS payments.

Our summer fundraisers and regular patrons have, quite literally, kept us going over the years.

Up until 2018, the cafe has always managed to bring in most of our income and has funded everything else we do - exhibitions, groups, meetups, performances and other lovely projects. But the local scene and national economy has changed recently, and things have become very challenging, threatening our ability to keep going as our lease comes up for renewal in 2019 and we plan for the future of our project.

As more and more food businesses, cafes and bars open in the city and our running costs go up, we are finding our cafe model is not sustaining our arts and community events to the extent that it did.

We want to ensure that we can keep our focus on our overall mission as we always have done, but increasingly we are spending most of our time and energy just trying to keep our cafe income from dropping - this is simply not sustainable for us.

To commit to running for another ten years (at least) as we want to, we need to ensure that a greater percentage of our income comes from sources other than just the food and drink sales and is a reliable and steady amount. We aren't closing the cafe - tasty veggie nosh and organic goodies will always be a big part of what we do, we just want to safeguard ourselves against the uncertainties of an ever-changing, unpredictable and very competitive industry.

We are looking to raise regular monthly amounts to cover the basic costs of rent, utility bills, Council tax and licences. The basic things we need to open our doors - or to have doors to open at all!

It costs us about £1.50 in total overall for every minute we are open, but a lot can happen in that one minute:

- Somebody can stand up and recite a poem at an open mic for the first time
- An artist can hang their very first picture in a public gallery
- Two creatives can start a conversation that leads to a collaboration
- Somebody can pick up a leaflet or see a poster on our community noticeboard that leads to a new connection
- A volunteer can learn a brand new skill  ....and the list goes on!

Our logo is a butterfly because we are all about transformation of people and communities through small actions - and our rewards reflect this symbol too, from baby caterpillars (who we know can make a huge impact because of numbers, as any gardener will tell you!) to the magnificent and rare Swallowtail Butterfly, our highest reward level. The butterflies for each tier were designed by Caroline Misselbrook of Daff Illustration

Whichever level you choose, you will become part of a vital community that will ensure the future of The Art House for years to come.

Thank you so much for your support, without it we simply would not be able to be here and serve our creative community.

A note about rewards: If you are not bothered about rewards, or want the rewards but can give a little extra, each tier can be adjusted. The rewards are a work in progress, we are adding more over the next months and everyone who joins will get any new rewards added!

A note about $ dollars - Patreon does not support any other currencies at the moment, but in all other ways it is the best platform for this. We have put a rough estimate of the £ value of the lower tiers to save time (it is an estimate obviously as currencies fluctuate). Patreon add VAT to our pledges, it's a little clumsy but it saves a lot of admin our end and unlike many chain cafes, we do actually pay our taxes :)
