Who is Theater Mitu?

We're a permanent group of collaborators committed to expanding the definition of theater through methodical experimentation with its form. Driven by a theory we call Whole Theater, the company investigates global performance as a source for our training, work, and methodologies.

Our work investigates the space between acting and performance, design and installation, and multimedia and interactive technology. Under the leadership of founding artistic director Rubén Polendo, the company transliterates a wide variety of global performance traditions and explores theatrical processes through interdisciplinary arts practice, while supporting the growth of its members, who sit at the creative core of all the company’s work.

We invite you to collaborate!

By becoming a Patreon supporter, you will join the ranks of foundations, institutions, and individual community members who have supported Theater Mitu for over twenty years. Your commitment to our work means an immense amount to our company members, the hundreds of artists we support, and the diverse local and international community we serve. We look forward to utilizing this platform to create a deeper engagement with you, our community of advocates, supporters, and friends.

What We Do

  • We build bridges. For over twenty years Theater Mitu has been building bridges between global collaborators, contemporary art makers, classical traditions, artistic practices, and innovative technology & performance.

  • We innovate and incubate. Our commitment to innovation drives everything we do - global research, training initiatives, education programing, and the development and touring of our productions.

  • We create community. Theater Mitu has established MITU580 as a multi-use art space designed to be a home for innovative art and a true embodiment of our values, our ethos, and our commitment to you - our community.

Our New Home: MITU580

Theater Mitu retrofitted this former glass recycling facility in Gowanus, Brooklyn into 2,400 square feet of flexible space intended to intersect the fields of performance, installation art, new-media, and design. MITU580 is at once a studio space and performance venue to house all of Theater Mitu’s programming, as well as a state of the art production facility capable of hosting all types of innovative performances and events.

Who We Serve

We serve a diverse constituency that includes local communities in Gowanus, Brooklyn, individuals throughout all the boroughs of New York City, and an international body of makers, thinkers, and community members committed to cross-cultural exchange in the arts. Our broader audience includes established and emerging artists working across the disciplines of theater, visual art, film, music, and dance, as well as students, scholars, academics, and curious citizens both at home and abroad. We embody the ethics of global citizenship and in so doing seek to amplify the voices of those in the margins of our society by creating an environment at MITU580 that provides equity and inclusiveness across the spectrum of gender, race, and class.

Our Work

Theater Mitu’s work sits at the intersection of art, science, and theology. These modes of inquiry inform all of our work. We address them in our research by conducting global fieldwork with specialists who deepen our understanding of the world through their experience and practice. We synthesize them in our education programing, providing students with new perspectives and techniques to expand their art-making skills. We manifest them in our productions by distilling experiments conducted in laboratory to reveal the interconnectedness of human consciousness via the shared experience of live performance. We are art-makers who are curious about the things that mystify us, confuse us, disturb us, and most of all, the things that expand our worldview beyond our experience of the self. It is in the chaos of colliding art, science, and theology with the perspectives and personalities of company members that Theater Mitu’s work emerges.

Where does the money go?

As a permanent ensemble, we are committed to paying our artists competitive wages as they are all professionals at the top of their fields. A portion of all of our income is reserved for artist salaries and Patreon in no exception. By supporting Theater Mitu, you are helping us pay our artists directly for their work.
