Salaams, Peace, Hello,

I am Suhaiymah, also known as "thebrownhijabi" online.

After I won the runner-up position at the 2017 Roundhouse Poetry Slam I was made a Roundhouse fellow and short-listed for the 2018 Outspoken Prize for Performance poetry for my poem, This Is Not A Humanising Poem, which went viral.

I was studying at the time, but since then, due to the opportunities it threw open and the support from so many people nationally and internationally, I now write words (poems, articles & plays (well, one)) & speak words (spoken-word poetry, speeches & panel talks) focusing on the politics of race, gender, Islamophobia, intersectionality, the Eurocentricity of academia and decolonising minds/bodies.

My work and myself have been featured in The Independent,on BBC Radio stations, ITV, The Islam Channel, Sky TV, TEDx events, music festivals, US slams and UK universities.

I am soon to become an essayist for the anthology, Cut From The Same Cloth, a groundbreaking collection of essays by hijab-wearing Muslim women in the UK which stand in the face of hijab-splaining and tokenisation. I am also regularly commissioned to write new poems or speeches, alongside invitations to speak on different topics all over the country.

My work doesn't currently make enough for me to move out of my parents' home and that means I live a significant train journey away from most of the events I am invited to speak and participate in in London. It also means I miss out on seeing other people's creative output and getting to meet and be part of much of the political events happening in the UK. At the same time, the sporadic yet consistent nature of the writing, speaking and performing makes it hard to find a part-time job that is flexible enough to allow me to continue doing all the writing, preparation and travel work I do.

I just need a little leg up to get myself in position to be able to do this sustainably. I am currently applying for different jobs to accompany my writing and speaking work, but since I am not based in London I also need a job that pays enough to sustain me living in London, whilst flexible enough that I can continue to write and participate in all the different performances and venues I get invited to, whilst making enough to live in London... if you see what I mean...
