Auros Harman So when you guys did Strip Search, was there like a cabal of people joking around about sexy stuff, confusing the folks who were more mainstream? Or were you *all* uninhibited, but most folks kept that stuff off-camera? I know I remember Amy having shown up in OJST previously, and now you've roped in Abby. (I swear I didn't think of the double entendre until after writing that sentence.) Going on the "nerds tend to be sexually adventurous" principle ( http://www.thestranger.com/seattle/control-tower/Content?oid=6874748 ) I'd wager that Maki is "one of us"... I always find it kind of mind-boggling seeing just how sheltered Mike Krahulik is. It leads to some kind of unpleasant situations -- he said some really ignorant things about trans folks a couple years back -- but it always seems like his heart is in the right place and he's willing to learn, when folks gently prod him about it...

Cat and Fly

A short comic based on an observation of a friend's cat! Dead fly on the sill, investigate, eat, hork, surprised to find another (actually the same!) dead fly, investigate, loose fly, try to find fly (stuck to it's nose), get scared witless when fly falls from nose. CATS.

Shannon Saar Oh my, this is a pleasant surprise. I love the palette, and the design is breathtaking. I have a couple things, though...Why is she up on branches? Is there a significance about trees in the strip that I'm missing? And as much as I love the Art Nouveau style, and the artistic endeavor...wouldn't Art Deco better suit the time period?

Derek Meyer The dimensions and style remind me of a tarot card. That look of serenity seems ominous to me. I'm not sure if it's a context thing where I can't separate the character from the tone of Broodhollow, or if the idea of contentment just bothers me generally.

extra chainsawsuit - the potato salad strip

I talked myself out of running this strip on the site today. I took a stance in the comic, even though I fully recognize there are many stances one can take on the subject. I still think it's important to consider it, that's much more of my intended message than the one the comic gives: I'm not good at accepting "ha ha, it's funny if you just turn your brain off, don't think too much about it." I want to think about things more. If a thing can only be funny if you disable the part of you that tells you it's not funny, then it may actually not be funny. Anyway, here's my original post: --- we talk about this on the podcast with a positive spin, and i want to be thoughtful about it -- once upon a time, i used to think the game guitar hero was a waste of time. why not actually learn to play guitar? but once you make that argument, you can then say "why learn guitar when the lawn needs mowing? use the time to learn a trade or become an accountant" and now you're telling people how and when to have fun. likewise, you can't spend every disposable cent on someone's surgery -- you're not obligated to, nor should you be. nor is the guy doing this kickstarter -- which i'm sure he could never have predicted -- obligated to spend a chunk of the money on "something" "worthwhile," because no one gets to define for someone else what that is. but by the same token... it was worthwhile to me to give you a little reason to think about this. the comic is super one-sided; it's not a solution. i'm not good at "just turn your brain off and laugh, it's funny, don't analyze it." i think everything deserves analysis, whatever it may lead to.

Vince LaLuz Dude, I'm not sure if I was able to read all that much into paying half-infinity for a horse lo these many years ago... but I have definitely run into some thought provoking strips. And then boner college... or Stephenie Meyer's - rapist... and so on. But yea, thanks for the quick insight. You're much better at explaining to my wife, exactly why I like your art.

Kris Straub even the old dumb chainsawsuits were a comment on the trend of doing dumb scribble comics. chainsawsuit was originally mocking that style!! then i decided i actually liked making them

July 8, 2014 19:36:30 · Reply

Jeff Good Simple drawings really do work for more punchline oriented comics (even if they are more thought-provoking like this one). Not every webcomic can be drawn with the detail of Broodhollow, and honestly most jokes don't deserve that treatment. You can still convey a lot with a simple drawing. It just frees you up to focus on the joke (or other projects) without having to worry about how it looks.

Mark Hechim How much is one life worth? If you had $1,000,000, how much of that would you have to spend to "save" a life? $1/day to some kid in Africa? If that's all it takes, why aren't you doing that right now? You monster.

July 30, 2014 00:09:34 · Reply

Kris Straub i suspect this is the actual "horror" of the story, where you're basically the only one who knows that you did something wrong. pushing the button kills a random stranger, and the act is utterly untraceable back to you -- except you'll always know you did it. ditto for donating! maybe your meal donation saved 3 people. but are you really saying you couldn't have given enough to save 4? how much of the world is your fault?

July 30, 2014 00:50:49 · Reply

Joshua Jones The big twist is supposed to be given after you push the button, that's when he says he's going to give the box to someone that doesn't know you. The implication is that you are the stranger who will die when someone pushes the button, as well as knowing you have to put your life in the hands of a stranger when your own choice led to a stranger's death. The million dollars is basically a death sentence, and the worst part is that you know you'd deserve it. Don't take money from strangers, or they'll kill you.

Stretch Goals: It's dangerous to chap alone!

Hello, ladies and dudes. So here are the things that are happening in my brain and traveling through my nerves to my muscles and into the world: You may have noticed that the first 5 stretch goals I set for my Patreon got knocked over REALLY quickly. Like, within maybe the first 12 hours of the page being live. This is because I didn't think in my wildest dreams that people would be so generous, and it truly blew me away. So I'm supposed to do Let's Play videos, learn how to use Flash, and collaborate more with my friends. Those are things on my plate now, but I'm not going to let them distract me from writing new songs, because that's why this page is even here. You eat the veggies before you have dessert, you know? But that brings me to the furthest stretch goal - I write and put out a chap hop EP. (If you don't know what chap hop is, put on your listening pants and search for "Professor Elemental" on YouTube.) I set that goal thinking there's no way in a million years I'd get $2,300/video within 6 months, even a year of starting, and I thought I'd have a lot of time to get my feet under me and shore some production budget money away. So, now here we are, at a little over $2,200, and I won't mince words here: I'm dreading hitting that stretch goal – not in general! but right now I'm trying to get some steam built up with new original songs, and getting bespoke sonnets and limericks out to those who deserve them. And if I want to make the chap hop thing sound as awesome as it sounds in my head, I need to consult a few friends of mine who actually know what they're doing, and I didn't budget for that when I set that goal. (I didn't budget at all, really. I just like the number 23.) So I'm going to kick the chap hop stretch goal up to $5,000. This gives me time to get some of this other stuff off my plate, and also gives me to chance to make this an actual Cool Sounding Thing and not a pile of crappy GarageBand loops (which is really all I'm capable of on my own.) So that's what's happening with the chappening. Please don't be mad. <3, Molly
