The Family Tree is a drama podcast from the team behind British Podcast Award Nominated Getting Better Acquainted, an in-conversation podcast that has been featured on BBC Radio 4’s  In Pod We Trust and recommended by The Guardian, The Financial Times and Time Out. Debuting five years ago, it has built up a large archive of conversations with all kinds of people, the conversations characterised by being about openness, honesty and truth. In Autumn 2016, all that changed with the arrival of a dramatic new spin-off podcast drama that explored similar themes but through the medium of fiction... Or is it fiction? We’ll let you decide…

Season 1 went out from September to December 2016, and 2017/18 saw the release of Season 2, in which exciting developments took place. Both seasons can be listened to in their entirety via our websiteiTunes or wherever you get your podcasts.

We are now making Season 3 - the show's final season - but we need your help to do that.

Season 3 will be released from January 2019, and will be comprised of 30 episodes, with a maximum of four released per month. Thanks to everyone who has signed up as a patron; your contributions have been really appreciated and have helped us do everything we've done so far. The story is heading to some very exciting places, and we already have a treasure trove of exciting material to share with you.

We want to pay our performers fairly.
We believe in artists being paid for their work, and we’ve done our best to make this happen, but without the series generating an income, we’re limited in what we can pay them. Listener contributions can help pay all the people we’re working with a fair fee for their work.

We believe in our content being available for everyone.
We don’t want to disappear behind a paywall. We believe in free content funded by those who are willing and able to contribute. We don’t want to cut anyone off because they don’t have the money to hear our story.

We have more of this story to tell.
We’re really proud of Season 1. But we also have so more to come. With your help, we can fund seasons 2 and 3… and we’re SO excited about what we have in store for you there!

Why Patreon?
With Patreon, listeners can donate whatever they want per episode. This puts you in front of the wheel, and that’s what we want: you don’t pay any more than what you can afford, and everything you contribute, no matter how small, can help us out. You can also set a monthly cap, so even if we went crazy and decided to release 900 episodes in one month (we won’t!) you wouldn’t break the bank!

Please do be aware that Patreon adds VAT onto your pledge. You'll be warned before you sign up though, and you'll be told exactly how much will be collected.

How we’ll use your money:
We have 4 goals.

Goal 1: Reclaim our initial investment.
We’ve paid our performers. We’ve paid for a website; for art work; for podcast hosting; for recording space; for promotion… we are a teaching assistant and a freelance storyteller… this isn’t money we have, and we could do with scraping it back!

Goal 2: Pay our performers fairly.
We’ve paid them, but we’d like to pay them more. Artists should be able to make a living from their art, and we want to be on the right side of the battle. And we’re artists too: it’d also be nice if we could pay ourselves a bit!

Goal 3: Fund a second season to a basic level.
With this goal reached, we can create Season 2 with basic payments to everyone.

Goal 4: Fund a second season to a fair level.
If we hit this goal, we can pay our performers fairly (see Goal 2!)

What’s in it for you?
We hope that you’ll enjoy this story so much that you’ll want to help us to fund it and continue to tell it. But we have some shiny extra-offerings that we hope will pique your interest… head over to the rewards to see what else your support could buy you! We'll develop the perks as we go on - and as you get to know the characters a bit more - and we'd also like to hear your suggestions: if there's anything you'd like, let us know! Please also note that the larger rewards include payment for the extra work involved in fulfilling them: you're funding more art by paying higher prices!

But what about the show?
What does it mean to be human? Have we reached the end of evolution? This show examines the experience of being extra-human.

Dave Pickering investigates and documents a challenging new development in human consciousness. Building on the revelations that came from the Sullivan family mystery, he continues to have conversations with and about changelings, finding himself more and more caught up in the drama.

The story is supplemented by non-fiction Cuttings episodes, which give context to the lived experience of the show's subjects and explore broader issues around the dram.

This will pay us back what we've already spent to make the show, including on performers, website, art work, podcast hosting, recording space and promotion. We know it's a lot of money, but a lot of work has gone into this, and big numbers break down into small ones.
