A short story about me is that I drew for 25 years, non-stop… and then I stopped. I studied for a BA in Digital Animation, fell into video and animation/motion graphics, more into cutting and pasting video and projecting it on to walls for audiences than filling up a studio with canvases alone. After 8 years I still loved film and animation but I was burning out from people wanting the work but not paying for it. The moment I realised it wasn't going to last was when the animation studio Rhythm & Hues closed 11 days before winning the Oscar for special effects for The Life of Pi. If being nominated for an Oscar for your video skills couldn’t keep your business afloat, what could? As motion graphics studios folded everywhere, I hung up my VJ decks and thought about what else I was good at.

I got back into drawing by leafing through two decades of sketchbooks and realising there was a style forming, a voice coming through, if I let it. Like a lot of queer people the journey to realising it’s OK to be me was longer and more complicated than it should have been, and I’d spent way too long excusing, denying and obscuring aspects of myself and my artistic intentions that were ready to come out uncensored.

To be able to share my work, and feel the appreciation for it from the world, is incredible, and feeds my desire to experiment and explore. As each year passes I find myself increasingly frustrated that I don’t have the funds to try different media - who knows what else I could be producing if I had the opportunity? So having nothing to lose, I’m trying this out.

What is on offer for you is the chance to have a direct hand in an artist’s development, and to see and collect the results. There are a variety of printmaking, sculpture and other media courses on offer in London, and the one thing holding me back from enrolling is the funds. Patreons will be entitled to the prints on a first-sponsored first-served basis, depending on the level of support offered. What I’d like to learn first are printing techniques such as ething, lithography, intaglio, risography, and silkscreening. You’ll have the opportunity to elect which of my works I recreate using these methods, and tilt my hand in other ways, if you wish to. I also want to be able to make 3 dimensional bust sculptures using 3D printing, traditional clay methods, and eventually perhaps bronze.

My practise will continue with or without support; like all artists I’m driven by a passion to create and I’m surviving in London solely from my work, which is no small feat this side of Neoliberalism*. But with your backing I can climb higher and see further, and share the spoils with you. The first course I want to enroll in is this etching course at East London Printmakers. If I can raise the funds in time, this will happen in June. Othewise, August. I’ll need to raise at least 2/3 of the fee in order to book a place. https://www.eastlondonprintmakers.co.uk/course/et...

And here's an etching by Rembrandt so you can see the technique: https://www.printsolo.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/...

The drawing is scratched into a metal plate, which is then bathed in acid to deepen the scratches and turn them into tiny ink canals. Then ink is applied and paper is pressed against the plate to make multiple copies of the same image. I did this once in school about 20 years ago with my art teacher, the wonderful Ivan Day http://www.historicfood.com/portal.htm
... time for a refresher course.

So chip in what you can and I look forward to presenting you with your extremely limited, special edition first-of-its-kind etching, signed and numbered with a special thankyou. This is going to expand my practise and bring new opportunities, so I can’t wait to get started.

This would cover two courses so you'll be entitled to a portrait in each new medium - of yourself or anyone of your choice. You may also wish to own a new version of one of my older pieces. For the educational experience I'm open to recreating prior work in new media. This is a life- and career- changing pledge so we can discuss what it's worth to you.
